Re: One More Intro

Hi Larry,
Thanks for your response. That is not the reel I am thinking of. So that mystery will continue for a while. I checked my card catalog for my reel collection and found that one of my The Brighter Day programs was on the same reel as that Fred Waring program
listed. I logged that show as Patsy and Elizabeth talk of springtime and Otis J. Hopkins on porch. If that's the same show you have I suspect I got it in trade from Joe Crawford who probably produced that KLON show. I have no idea whatever happened to the
reel.
Thanks, that was fun reminiscing.

I think your message must have been prompted by the article I wrote specifically for "Radiogram" and submitted to the editor earlier this week.
So here is the background. About the year 2005 I ran across Reel 763 on page 109 of the General Catalog. I borrowed the tapes listed on that reel and dubbed them before returning them to the library. Everything listed on the reel was on the tapes as
well as an uncataloged episode of "The Brighter Day." The source of this reel was a July 4, 1980 broadcast on KLON-FM in Long Beach, California. There are some great introductions to the shows, and the sound quality is outstanding. As I recall, the first
episode aired was the one of "Just Plain Bill" listed in the catalog, which began with a properly rousing rendition of "Polly-Wolly Doodle" on the harmonica.
As to your question about the contents of the the reel, here is the listing on page 109 of the catalog: Side 1: JUST PLAIN BILL, THE FRED WARING SHOW, THE JACK BERCH SHOW, AGAINST THE STORM; Side 2: THE GUIDING LIGHT, MIDSTREAM, FRONT PAGE DRAMA, MOON
DREAMS, FLASH GORDON and SHADOW OF FU MANCHU.
I hope this helps, and that it answers your question fully. If you need any additional information or clarification, please don't hesitate to write me again. I always answer messages promptly and will always be glad to hear from you.
Best wishes,
Larry

Hi Larry,
I remember that reel you are talking about. I was librarian for some of the open reel, cassette and CD libraries for SPERDVAC for over 25 years.. I know I wrote the missing information in my catalog and sent the info to the person who was in charge of updating
and corrections. I assumed that later versions of the catalog would have all the shows listed. I can't remember if it was in the General Library or the Hollywood Museum series. All my old catalogs are inaccessible at the moment. I vaguely recall it was a 60
minute cassette with only two shows listed. That would mean the Hollywood Museum series. I copied all the shows into my open reel collection. Would you mind telling me what the shows were so I can look them up?
Thanks,
Barbara

I hope you are getting through the crisis well and enjoying daily life despite so many places of business and entertainment being closed. My daughter did tell me yesterday that it looks as if the major league baseball season may soon start, with all the
games being played in Arizona. It would be great to have baseball on television again.
I am writing to update our previous correspondence and to ask your advice on a matter. After you told me about "Radiogram" I composed an article that was slightly longer than the one I had envisioned because I discovered that on one particular reel in
the SPERDVAC General Library there are four different old-time radio soap opera episodes that are not in the OTRR Library collection, one of which I think has never been circulated because it is not even listed in the catalog as being on that reel.
Earlier this week I submitted the article to Patrick Luciano using the email address Radiogram@.... I have not yet received a reply acknowledging receipt of the submission, which concerns me because most people, as I always do, respond promptly
to email messages.
If Patrick is the person you refer to as your good friend and someone who has published quite a few of your notes and articles in "Radiogram", then you know him well enough to advise me as to how to proceed. I have had a number of thoughts, the foremost
being that he looked at the article and rejected it out of hand and did not think it was worth even a reply. Another is that perhaps he only gets around to reading submissions on weekends and thus has not yet seen it. One editor I submitted a piece to went
ten days without replying to my message. Finally, exasperated, I wrote him and asked if he was in a coma. He replied testily that he has accepted the article, that it is slated for publication at a later date, and that he doesn't think it necessary to jump
right on every message he receives and respond immediately. He said he sometimes goes three days without reading his emails!
I do hope this message is amusing you, but I will finally get to the point. Do you have any advice for me as to how to proceed? I am thinking that if I don't hear back from Patrick by Monday, he probably has no interest in what I submitted and I will
just find somewhere else to share the information contained in it. Do you think I should write him again if he has not replied by tomorrow, or just let the matter go?
I will abide by whatever advice you give me if you reply to this message. Also, please let me know if Patrick is the current editor and whether I did use the correct email address for my submission.
I hope to hear back from you today if it is convenient for you to reply.
Best wishes,
Larry Maupin
