I have been working on upgrading the OTRR groups Hopalong Cassidy Certified shows.
Ryan has found and provided me a new collection of shows in addition to the Certified Series. Approximately 30% of these shows were determined to be better copies than the Cert Series.
I have replaced the OTRR collection with these better quality shows
Also. many of the Certified shows had cropped or incomplete intros or endings. I have patched these shows and made ALL Hoppy shows now complete.
I have normalized many of the low volume shows. I have also adjusted the Bass and Treble on many over processed shows to make them easier and more enjoyable to listen to.
28 shows included 4-6 min of musical interludes where commercials were supposed to be inserted. I cropped these interludes making those show more continuous to listen to.

To complete the series with better quality shows, I would like to replace 6 of the lowest quality shows. These are shows which I only rate FAIR quality. I would appreciate it if someone could provide me with better quality shows for the following episodes.
Episode 25 - The Medicine Man
Episode 26 - The Flying Outlaw
Episode 42 - Hoppy Pays a  Debt
Episode 43 -  Hoppy Turns on the Heat
Episode 51 - The Mystery of the Diamond 'Z'
Episode 68 -  Stagecoach West

Thanks in advance.
A Hoppy Fan

The fact that Mr. James kept a detailed list (even "Stand By for Crime" I'm sure ;-)) is wonderful to hear! I'll email you off list so that I don't pester everyone here. I'll get your email from your website if possible, and email you today or tomorrow.

All the best;
Scott

I have the first broadcast dates for all of Grace Gibsons shows.  Reg James kept all that info in a little black book.

That is listed in the Production Houses output list on the website.

The youtube video from MANC 2016 was about American Influence on Australian OTR.  Rather than a History of Australian OTR.

Not all OTR is to my taste either.  Grace Gibson did a lot of serials aimed specifically at Women.  I prefer self contained series rather than serials.  But Bruce has a lot to choose from.  It keeps him busy.

Grace had half a dozen major rivals and lots of small ones.  George Edwards output was massive and he was her biggest rival.  But because of her connections in the U S., even managing TRANSCO early in WWII, Grace sold more shows back to the U.S. than any other Australian Production House.

That list is pretty impressive, Ian.

Being meaning to watch your History of Australian OTR the Martin Grams posted on YouTube a while back. Maybe tonight is the night. Actually, tonight would be the perfect night, come to think of it.

It's interesting to ponder the idea that George Edwards and Grace Gibson were arch rivals. Makes sense, given that it was a business, after all.

I'm a huge fan of Bruce Ferrier's output. Not everything is to my taste, but the lion's share is. I'll post a separate thread of shows that I'd like to find broadcast dates for (if I can't find them on your extensive list). Just the year would suffice, if anyone can help. Seeing as they were transcriptions, I assume broadcasters around the world could air them at a time most suitable to them.

Still more work to do in this section putting colums in, but the data is there.  Under George Edwards serials that I have documented are list, along with the first broadcast date.  Remember that Australian dates are DD/MM/YYYY.  In this case there is a column for Year, then the date including year.  I just got bored lining it up and making columns and haven't got back to it.

Over 6,000 Australian Series/Serials are listed in that link.

Also, Bruce Ferrier is a Mate of mine, but you have to remember George Edwards was Grace's biggest competitor both when she came to Australia from TRANSCO and started ARTRANSA and then later when she started Grace Gibson Productions.  No love lost between the two.  Long before Bruce's time.

Thanks all for the deep dive into this topic. It's frustrating to think how much has been lost, but frankly, we can say that about pretty much everything, can't we?

With regard to an upgrade, I have never bought off Jerry H. before, but this might just be the opportunity to jump into those waters. We'll probably want to listen to the series again in a couple of years and an improvement, even a slight one, would be well worth the cost.

Phil, I'll send you my email address this morning.

Ian, thank you very much for your detailed information. It was your list of Mr. Edwards output that made my head spin. So many serials. And if the quality was up to the standard of what survives, which I assume it was, the loss is enormous.

Next on my list of queries and questions will be the transcription dates for a number of various Australian series and serials. Stay tuned!

Thanks again;
Scott

Also circulating, maybe from Radio Archives is Man in the Iron Mask as well as Son of Porthos.

The episodes of Frankenstein from Jerry are very low in sound volume as are the circulating episodes, but they are clearer and less muffled as the circulating episodes, nor are they suffering from speed issues where in the intro music of the circulating episodes it speeds up and down.  I would suggest buying the set from him to get the quality.  You can trust the quality from Jerry.  Easy to increase the volume.

The serials that have shown up, including Frankenstein and others Radio Archives have released are originating in the U.S.  I see Jerry only has the 13 episode Frankenstein that was on the LP, but I don't know about the quality.  I will ask him.

Radio Archives have 1 or 2 incomplete George Edwards serials as they have asked me and other collectors if the missing episodes have surfaced.

Occasionally a single disc will turn up, but you need 26, 52, 104 discs to make a complete run.  All his 1 hour weekly self contained shows were pre transcription.

Good morning all.

A quick note this morning regarding Mr. George Edwards. My wife and I are huge fans of his available output, having listened to excellent transfers of his "Doctor Jekyll and Mr. Hyde", "The Count of Monte Cristo", "Afloat with Henry Morgan" and "The Man in the Iron Mask" thanks to the fine work from Radio Archives.

For Halloween, we listened to his much earlier adaptation of Frankenstein and, while still uniformly excellent, was marred by crappy quality. I think this entered my collection 20 years ago, and it sounds like it. Muffled, with those annoying mp3 'pops' (I don't know how else to describe them, but they drive me insane), etc;

So my question for the morning is this: do we have any idea as to how much more of his prodigious output survives? Does anyone have a better copy of Frankenstein or any of his other works? I approached Bruce from Grace Gibson about seeing what else was in the Australian archives, but he informed me that it's not easy to get recordings out of there unless you have the proper paperwork, so that avenue appears to be closed.

Anyway, any information would be greatly appreciated.

Best;
Scott

Radiola combined episodes to make a 30 minute episode when they were released in album form.  There are 4 of them.

So, quality is far better but I do not know if anything is missing from the presentation.

If anyone wants to check, I’d be happy to send them a link.

I’ve been looking for an upgrade too….I used to have the Radiola vinyl from the 80s (?), which cut the intro/outros to make it a 2-hour story - it was not amazing quality, but much better and listenable than what I have now.

Howie Wing Fans,

I found a copy of an Howie Wing episode in an online archive and the episode is available to download FREE.  Just click the stacked dots on the right side of the player to find the download button.

This is an episode our small group of researchers already has, but were unable to release due to an agreement with one of the archives that had provided it to us. However, this copy is open for download now since it's from an entirely different source.

Based on my research this is episode #380, from Howie Wing's second season/3rd cycle. Date should be June 6, 1939.  During the second season there were three separate storylines/adventures, so this is from the final (3rd) set of episodes for season 2.

In the archive, there are two copies of this same program (I was hoping for two different copies, but it's pretty exciting to find even one!)

Those of you who have an interest in the show can add another one to the 6 already in circulation.

Here's a synopis of the episode:

Episode 380, June 9, 1939

Starts with a Promo for Cadet Aviation Corps Membership Kit.

RECAP:  Howie and Donna have learned that Jack Ashbrook (the brother of their friend, Opal Cushing) was one of a gang of criminals who is about to attempt a prison break. They race to the flying field. Ashbrook shows up and Howie attempts to stop him by force. The two men fight and when Jack takes off in the autogiro, Donna is on board with him!

Donna is a reluctant companion as Ashbrook flies out to pick up The Cobra at the prison, so they can find Jake Peters. "He's making a fool of you, Jack!" says Donna, but Jack won’t be swayed. They pick up Cobra on the roof of the cell block, and take off with Donna. They barely make the takeoff, and then another plane appears in the fog and dives toward them again and again. "Wow, that guy's a maniac!” says Jack, and Cobra is also frightened.  Both Donna and Cobra beg Jack to land.  He refuses, and Donna takes things into her own hands....

Enjoy!

Hi Richard,

I have all broadcast dates for the second series and can send those to you.  I have only the Start dates of the second series and know the US shows were on air 4 days per week (M-Th).

The Excel sheet of dates for the second series is attached and another for the 1st series.

There are a lot of unknowns about the first season of this show. We know there was a contract for 104 episodes, but don't know if they all got made or if that number was extended. We do have information that it was heard 4x per week, M-Thursday (second series was 5 days a week, m-f).  So I've used dates from 2/14/1938 when we believe the first US show was heard.

I don't know if they kept to that schedule religiously, or if there were some shows that got pre-empted due to holidays or other special events, so the dating could be off a few days here and there.

All the episodes I found were from the tail end of the first season and we don't have scripts for those.. just the recordings.   Haven't found too many logs that have enough information to know if my undated and untitled episodes were broadcast on a particular date.

So.. here's what I have on dates... as I said, second series dates are pretty well documented, but the first series is full of unknowns.

I don't think the two Canadian episodes I have (season 3) have ever been released, but could be.  They're actually kind of awful.. bad acting, not all that great scripting... And, as with season 1, very little is known about this final series.  The writer had died months before it was aired, and I doubt he actually wrote the scripts, but may have left outlines for the stories.

Let me know what other info you might need if you decide to do a bit of research on this little known show. I may have some of what you might need.

Best,

Kathy

Kathy,
If you are not able to share the actual file (yet) can you provide the information that goes with the files.  That would be a start.  I believe I understand that there was around 250 of the shows.  If I can determine the 1st broadcast date and the frequency of the broadcasts I can build the sequence of the dates from there.

I hope you can get clearance to share the other shows at some time down the road.  Entities that hoard shows really frustrate me.  We are a vetted agency that respects ownership rights.  We are the preservers.  Hopefully they understand that the items would be safe with us...

What an interesting dip into the history of early OTR (well before my time). Thanks for posting the update and giving your feelings about it all.

The Hehn reels have been happily dominating my OTR time of late. Some of the collector names on the boxes or contents sheets are interesting, all names that were well known at that time in the hobby. It is funny to see notes written on the boxes, such as "restricted until May 1976." There are also notes related to the account of number of hours traded, who owes who what, and what's coming later. Trading was negotiated by total program time, usually trading a fixed number of hours for the same number of hours in return. I was reminded in one note that one of the key negotiating points was the brand and grade of recording tape to be used. OTR was expensive! If they were using 1200' tape, half-track, at 7.5ips speed, that meant in inflation-adjusted terms, the tape alone was costing them in the range of $3.50 PER HALF HOUR PROGRAM. It also meant that the programs had to be copied in real time, that is, copying a half hour program took a half hour to copy. How amazing it is nowadays to download recordings so quickly.

In terms of all of the recordings that have been reviewed so far, there are many programs that are in bad sound today that were in bad sound then. At least they can be processed with today's tools to be less bad and more listenable. It's also curious to hear disc recordings that have what would be considered as unacceptable today because they were not processed. Early disc transfers had significant levels of disc rumble that they really didn't have good ways of filtering out until equalizers became more popular and more affordable. If you ignore the rumble, there is a crispness to the sound of some of these recordings that is very satisfying. One thinks of how exciting it must have been to be in on the discovery of so many of these recordings when they were new and there was a deep sense of rescuing the era, not just compiling a collection recordings.

The contents sheets indicate that collectors were groping around for accurate show dates, especially the case when they encountered many AFRS recordings. They were also having difficulty with assigning consistent show titles for those series that did not announce any titles as part of the program. And... there's always bad handwriting -- so many of the reel contents sheets were handwritten, and it is easy to see how the differences in forming numbers led to mis-dating of recordings and misspelling of names and titles as the recipients tried to decipher what was on the contents sheets. We are lucky to have logs to refer to today, but there were none at that time. Those would come in the mid and late 1970s, but there were not many and most were not complete.

It has been an incredible journey back into OTRdom's founding years... with many more surprises to come.

Reel transfer volunteers are still needed. There are separate volunteers who do not have reels but have audio processing capabilities who are anxious to work with folks who can make the transfers. Please private message me if you can transfer reels and we'll try to match up the reels you get with some of your favorite series.

181  "Inner Sanctum" Mystery  - Blind Man's Bluff 11-4-44  (Government Woman's Power Campaign // Colgate-Palmolive) Part I of II

It might be worth combing through all of the shows to see if anything else missing is found or maybe even downloading everything.
Unfortunately, everything seems to be recorded in low quality MP3s.

Enjoy!

Kathy,
I created txt file placers based on your information.  I hope we can learn more information soon of the show names.....You are fortunate to have so many scripts.  I am sure it is rather frustrating to have so much to share but be stymied due to tight-fisted institutions.    You would think that the copywrite statutes would have passed long before now.   Thanks for all the lengthy legwork to get us this far.  So many small steps yet to take....

Kathy,
I believe I got that 250 number from that 2 part report you put up for the discovery of the records in the second hand shop...

Kathy,
I bow to you in most things in this regard.  You have obviously put in a crap more of the legwork to get things even this far.  As you stated previously these dates are a reasonable effort since we don't know about any preempting going on.  I just wanted to make sure it was accurate and I was not loseing my mind any more than I already have.

Kathy,
I grabbed that file you mentioned.  Their date was 6-9-39 but you said 6-6-39.  6-9 does fall at #380 in the sequence.  The file when downloaded had the words King George VI at the tomb of the unknown soldier...Thoughts?

Enjoy!

The shows Kathy found on the records did.  This is a very obscure show so info is still being located.  Scripts are available for a nice chunk of the collection.   I have about 6 of a potential 450ish shows.

Kathy,
I created txt file placers based on your information.
