Hi Alan,

Do you belong to REPS?  I ask because you are not on the list of members to whom I send updates about acquisitions by the online library.  If you are not a member and want the Fibber McGee shows, the only way you can get them is by joining REPS before Sunday at midnight.  The cost for a one-year membership is $25.  If you are not a member and do plan to join, please let me know and I will tell you the process involved in joining.  If you are a member and want the shows, I should be able to find you on the membership list and send you the shows.

Please reply and clarify this matter for me.

Best regards,

Larry

Hi Alan,

Thank you for your reply, and here is the information.  First, type "Radio Enthusiasts of Puget Sound" into your browser; then hover on "Get Involved," then click on the "Join REPS" link that is on the menu that drops down when you hover.  That will take you directly to the payment page, where you can pay $25 for a one-year membership using either PayPal or a credit card.

After you do that, please forward to me the receipt that will appear in your Inbox, and I will send it to the Secretary of REPS who will make sure you get fully enrolled and placed on the mailing list to receive all future issues of Air Check, the group's newsletter.

After I get your receipt, I will send you all 11 episodes of Fibber McGee and Molly and all 9 of the old-time radio soap operas if you want them.  If you only want one or the other please let me know.

I hope everything about how to join is clear, but if you have any trouble I can help.  It will be great having you as a REPS member, and I hope you will enjoy all the benefits of joining the the group.

Best regards,

Larry

Here is the link to join REPS; to be clear, this is an entirely different organization than the Old Time Radio Researchers and joining that club is not the same as joining the OTRR Purchasing Group (not that you can't do both!).

Talking about shortwave, and hope folks don't mind my 'hijacking' the thread, as it were, but can anyone recommend a good shortwave radio?

Alas, shortwave isn't what it once was, BBC and a few other

hearing any real OTR recently.

Maybe a year ago I heard some Amos and Andy and a couple other shows on

Scott, I intend to.  COVID has prevented me from visiting Bruce for a face to face since late 2019.  I want to get permission to upload A4 Promo sheets for various GG series/serials that Reg gave me to scan and then I returned the originals.  It is something I prefer to do face to face even though we email regularly when I am seeking permission to add things to the website or he is looking for shows or info.

I have more reminiscences from ex radio people to add to the site in the meantime in the 'Readers Contributions' section and 'The Argonauts' has to be rewritten for the book and the site when I finish the research on the early days that I am working on at the moment.

I haven't heard back re S.A. book as yet.  I might email as well.

Thank you for sending this Scott.  I just clicked on an episode to see if I could hear it, and the sound is very good.  When I was in college, my favorite professor was an English Victorian specialist, mature in years, a bachelor, very dignified with a Ph.D. from Yale.  One day he came into the classroom and told everybody he had begun watching Batman on television and that he was enjoying it very much. Maybe he thought the batmobile was cool!

I know this isn't OTR, but it is interesting. I'm watching it right now on HBO Max and it's pretty cool. Since this is video based there is a Batman themed radio that glows and flashes with the volume peaks and valleys in the audio. See image below.

The First two episodes are available on youtube.

Scott,
A very impressive 1,038 files from the South African venue.  A very nice collection.  Thanks for sharing them.

Scott,
Diesel Punk is a very well organized site.  I went ahead and added all the files to my cloud server so in case yours crashes you are backed up at this time.

All,
Turns out I have a lot more SA radio series than I originally thought. I've added an additional section for only my SA shows. Currently there are 25 series available, I've been going through my archives and I'm trying to update these on a weekly basis.

Here is a small piece I found on Wiki about SA radio.  It could be expanded by annotating lists of shows of how many were broadcast, cast members, a show log, etc.

Why don't we all put together a document about shows from South Africa?  An e-Book of sorts.

Everyone can have input about information.

The emphasis was not mine per se.  It was told to me numerous times to explain the situation.

The only book I found that discussed anything about early S.A. radio was a biography on Sid James.  That was where he got his start.

But then in a Harry Towers group I said I was a huge Sid James fan until I read in that book, how he abandoned his S.A. kids when he moved to England and refused to have anything to do with them.  Then a guy told me in no uncertain terms that it never happened.  Turns out he was a son of Sid James.

I have hundreds of books on British Radio and British Radio Stars, but have never found anything on S.A. radio.  The only S.A. transcriptions I have is a drama about the first heart transplant.

Talking to white people from S.A. and even Zimbabwe, Springbok Radio was hugely popular.

Reg James from Grace Gibson sold a lot of their titles into the country and several of Reg James Australian radio friends did stints there.  We discussed it several times.  S.A. sent some of their shows to GG to broadcast in Australia.

A book on the subject may not be in English, it may be in Africaans and that is why it hasn't left their shores.

I will ask.

Ian

Re: Springbok Radio.

Original Question: Is there a book on the subject?

Expected Answer: No.

No backstory asked for. No knowledge, or concern, on my part, of the backstory. The reason that I got my back up was simply because of the line in the initial response to my query: "It is THEIR heritage." (Ian's emphasis, not mine) as though by asking if there was a book, I was engaging in some sort of cultural appropriation. Let's be clear about the reason this thread got so heated.

Anyway, on to other things.

There's a book on a wonderful BBC show called "Music While You Work", which I just ordered. (I have a few samples of the show, and it's lovely.) I'm going to go to the mailbox and wait for that.

Hi Scott,

To join, you just type "Radio Enthusiasts of Puget Sound" into your browser, then click on the link that takes you to the website, then hover on "Get Involved" and select "How To Join" from the menu that drops down.  That will take you to the payment page where you can pay the $25 for a one-year membership to REPS using either PayPal or a credit card.

After you do that, please forward the receipt that will appear in your Inbox to me, and I will send all the episodes you want within 24 hours.  It will be great having you as a member.

Best regards,

Larry
