Re: Springbok Radio, Harry Allan Towers, etc;

Scott, I intend to.  COVID has prevented me from visiting Bruce for a face to face since late 2019.  I want to get permission to upload A4 Promo sheets for various GG series/serials that Reg gave me to scan and then I returned the originals.  It is something I prefer to do face to face even though we email regularly when I am seeking permission to add things to the website or he is looking for shows or info.

I have more reminiscences from ex radio people to add to the site in the meantime in the 'Readers Contributions' section and 'The Argonauts' has to be rewritten for the book and the site when I finish the research on the early days that I am working on at the moment.

I haven't heard back re S.A. book as yet.  I might email as well.

Ian

Thank you for sending this Scott.  I just clicked on an episode to see if I could hear it, and the sound is very good.  When I was in college, my favorite professor was an English Victorian specialist, mature in years, a bachelor, very dignified with a Ph.D. from Yale.  One day he came into the classroom and told everybody he had begun watching Batman on television and that he was enjoying it very much. Maybe he thought the batmobile was cool!

I know this isn't OTR, but it is interesting. I'm watching it right now on HBO Max and it's pretty cool. Since this is video based there is a Batman themed radio that glows and flashes with the volume peaks and valleys in the audio. See image below.

The First two episodes are available on youtube.

Here is a small piece I found on Wiki about SA radio.  It could be expanded by annotating lists of shows of how many were broadcast, cast members, a show log, etc.

Reg James from Grace Gibson sold a lot of their titles into the country and several of Reg James Australian radio friends did stints there.  We discussed it several times.  S.A. sent some of their shows to GG to broadcast in Australia.

A book on the subject may not be in English, it may be in Africaans and that is why it hasn't left their shores.

Original Question: Is there a book on the subject?

Expected Answer: No.

No backstory asked for. No knowledge, or concern, on my part, of the backstory. The reason that I got my back up was simply because of the line in the initial response to my query: "It is THEIR heritage." (Ian's emphasis, not mine) as though by asking if there was a book, I was engaging in some sort of cultural appropriation. Let's be clear about the reason this thread got so heated.

Anyway, on to other things.

There's a book on a wonderful BBC show called "Music While You Work", which I just ordered. (I have a few samples of the show, and it's lovely.) I'm going to go to the mailbox and wait for that.

Re: Old Time Radio Shortwave

Hi,

I've been an active SWL (shortwave listener) since around 1953 when I was given an old console radio (I was 10 yrs old).  I got heavily bit by the bug and it led to a lifelong interest in radio, career in electronics etc.

Alas, shortwave isn't what it once was, BBC and a few other international broadcasters still hang on (Radio Havana immediately comes to mind), as well as a few religious broadcasters.  But I don't recall hearing any real OTR recently.

Maybe a year ago I heard some Amos and Andy and a couple other shows on a 'pirate' broadcaster, but then, I haven't done a lot of SWLing in quite awhile (more active on the hambands though).

Chris, One day I should add a Reg James emails section to my website.  I treasure the hours we spent at his house in Sydney, with Reg and I discussing Australian radio in his sitting room and Dawn and and his wife Neryl discussing Grandkids etc in the kitchen, bringing out the occasional cup of tea or coffee.  His mind was sharp and clear almost to the end.  Neryl passed away just before COVID.

In 2012, Reg James listed Grace Gibson's Top 10 Favourite Actresses, Actors and Shows.  Coincidently they were his as well :)  We went on to scriptwriters as well.  Reg was very exact and split the favourite shows into genres complete with cast and brief explanation, even though he knew I already knew that.  Mentors are like that.

Dinah Shearing was number 2 behind Lyndall Barbour.  He actually listed the top 16.

Male Actors he listed the top 30 and Guy Doleman came in 22nd.

Also in 2012, Reg had been talking to Dinah Shearing and she indicated that Tudor Queen was her favourite role.  He sent her a couple of episodes of Tudor Princess and asked me for some Tudor Queen for her.  She also told him she had only ever heard a couple of episodes of Dossier on Dumetrius.

When my youngest daughter who is a teacher, asks me a question, she just wants the short answer.  My eldest daughter who is in finance wants the big picture.  My son the accountant just wants the facts.  Me, I love history and to me background is important.  I like to know where things fit.  Everybody is different.  Fortunately Reg and I were on the same wavelength.  I just needed to know the right questions to unlock the information he held.

Ian

A Harry Allan Towers group? That'd I'd be interested in joining. We love his radio, television and film projects. Interesting fellow. Died here in Toronto,  probably not 15 minutes from where I type this. Would have loved to have talked to him. We bought his autobiography, but I've yet to read it.

Sid James seemed like a sweet guy from everyone I've heard speak about him. Although I'd never heard that rumour, I'm glad it was a falsehood. That would have destroyed his memory for me as well.

I would have been very interested to talk to Reg James about Guy Doleman and Dinah Shearing. Two of my all time favourite radio actors. Ms. Shearing's performance in both Tudor Princess and Tudor Queen are remarkable. The fact that you had access to Reg for so long is wonderful.
