My definition of an air check is a station break during which the announcer gives the name, call letters and location of the radio station over which an episode is being broadcast. These are very rare, and looking for OTR episodes that have one is like going on a treasure hunt. I find it exciting to come across one because they give the listener an opportunity to imagine what it would have been like to listen to the episode at that particular time in history on that particular radio station.
There is a way to have some fun with this distro. In the list below, I will give all the information I have about the series, episode title and date of each show but will not reveal the air check. Instead, at the end of each episode description I will place in brackets the time during the program when the air check occurs. So if you see [1:24] or [14:46] you will know the exact minute and second to be on the alert for. If you want to, you can make a list of these 9 shows and the stations over which they were aired, save it and add to it when you happen upon more shows with air checks.
Notes: (1) The file that contains Edith Adams' Future also has We Are Always Young on it. You will need to wait about 10-15 seconds after the Edith Adams episode is finished, then you will hear the air check for We Are Always Young soon thereafter; (2) None of the files contain series or episode titles and dates, so I will list them below in the order in which I will send them out tomorrow and Wednesday. If you find any that do not match up, all you have to do is listen to the episode to learn which one it is. I hope that will not occur, but to err is human.
Now for the list:
1. "Nightmare" from Murder at Midnight (11/4/46). [0:25]
2. "Inditement" from Inditement [0:01]
3. Edith Adams' Future (7/25/41) [14:46]
4. We Are Always Young (7/25/41) [16:32] on same file.
5. "Bob Chester Orchestra" (9/21/39) [26:52]
6. National Barn Dance [1:24]
7. Grand Old Opry [25:53]
8. Counterspy (7/27/42) [0:12]
9. "Switchboard Secrets" from Front Page Drama (11/19/33) [0:26]. Note: The air check here gives only the name of the network, but I think the episode is worth including because almost nobody has ever heard of the network and it will be nice to have a show that was aired over it.

Re: Casebook of Gregory Hood - actor identification
Thanks everyone. Here's a follow-up question. Nearly every source lists Paul McGrath (Dunning as just one source) as one of the people who played Gregory Hood. They all seem to list the actors in order, which means McGrath was between Jackson Beck and Martin Gabel. However, there aren't a lot of episodes there, and so far I haven't found any indication of when McGrath would have been Gregory Hood. Does anyone have anything indicating when that would have been?

Can anyone help identify the actors playing Gregory Hood and
Sandy Taylor in the initial ABC episode? The information I have indicates that
it should be Elliott Lewis (articles from then mention Jackson Beck replacing
him three episodes after that, but that doesn't mean that's when it actually
happened), but I have my doubts - and the cast credits aren't listed at the end.
I have no information on who Sandy Taylor would be. Howard McNear was through at
least June 1949, but even I can tell that's not him. :)

Re: Casebook of Gregory Hood - actor identification
Karl Schadow
Larry is correct in that this ABC series originated from New York.
There are reviews in both Variety (Octobert 19, 1949) and The Billboard (Ocytober 29, 1949) which cite the following cast (characters added by yours truly):
Jackson Beck (Gregory Hood)
John McGovern (Sanderson Taylor)
Kathleen Cordell (Leora Thorne)
John Griggs (Brad Thorne)
Art Carney (Baker)
Florence Robinson (Florette?)
In the closing segment the crew is credited (also cited in both reviews): Martin Andrews (Director), Frank Cooper (Producer), Jerome B. Boss (writer). Announcer is unknown.

Hi, Gregory Hood is definitely Jackson Beck in this episode. I know the voice of Taylor but do not recall his name. Elliott Lewis had already come and gone as Gregory Hood in Hollywood. The episode you speak about was done from New York. Larry

Re: Black Flame
Here's a visual comparison of the two possible upgrades. To me, the differences between "1" and 11 in the OTRR set are extremely minor, if there at all. Perhaps an audiophile can tell the difference, but I couldn't.
Rick's version of #36, though, has slightly more range to it...maybe. More importantly, though, the OTRR set version has bands where information has been removed entirely. I think this one is a definite upgrade.
|
|
Re: Black Flame
Rick, You have the same files as are in the set - with possibly one or two sound upgrades. All the others are mislabeled (I listed previously what your number was versus the actual episode, e.g., "3. same as 13"). It doesn't sound like any of the other of the 225 total episodes are currently known to exist. That doesn't mean that more aren't out there in someone's collection somewhere, but with a mostly regional show that doesn't appear to have been very popular with collectors, it is not as likely. Larry did mention they dubbed them for SPERDVAC in the 90s (a donation). So, it is possible there are different recordings, but all - or mostly - from the same original source material. It does look like the mislabeled episodes have been floating around for a long time. Looking in Otter, I see most if not all of them listed there without any real title attached to them. So, it appears this is the current state of this series: 1-10: missing 11-13: extant, in OTRR set 14: missing 15: extant, in OTRR set 16-20: missing 21-23: extant, in OTRR set 24-30: missing 31: extant, in OTRR set 32-33: missing 34-43: extant, in OTRR set 44-52: missing 53-56: extant, in OTRR set 57: missing 58-60: extant, in OTRR set 61: missing 62-63: extant, in OTRR set 64-75: missing 76: extant, in OTRR set 77+: missing Or, to list it a different way, Extant: 11-13, 15, 21-23, 31, 34-43, 53-56, 58-60, 62-63, 76 Missing: 1-10, 14, 16-20, 24-30, 32-33, 44-52, 57, 61, 64-75, 77+
