I've started work on a maintained set for the syndicated serial Abroad with the Lockharts. This series was first broadcast in 1930, and features Gene and Kathleen Lockhart. Mr. Lockhart just wants to go on another fishing trip, but Mrs. Lockhart is tired of fishing trips, and wants to go to Europe like all of her girlfriends have done. Only nine of the (likely) 13 episodes are known to exist.

I have the copies of all the episodes known to exist from the OTRR library, but they are very low bitrate episodes (file sizes are between 3.6 and 4.1 MB) and of generally poor quality. Please check your collections for better quality episodes.

I do have new information on the series from what is generally out there. First, it was broadcast at least two months earlier than generally listed. The first broadcast date I have found is August 17, 1930 at 7:45 PM on Baltimore's WCAO. Second, I'm not finding much indication that there were ever more than 13 episodes made. Digital Deli (and the Otter logs, for that matter), says at least 16 episodes - without providing much evidence of that. I have newspaper logs for stations broadcasting it from 1930 through 1932 and of those that are likely complete, only one - WJSV (Washington, DC and from The Evening Star) shows more than 13 episodes. That one had a very unusual broadcast schedule, anyway, so it's hard to know for sure if all those dates are correct.

Also, if anyone has any additional information on the series, I'd gladly include that. I've only found newspaper listings and a few articles, but nothing in any periodicals of the time. I also don't have any information on the origin of the show. Digital Deli (and others) say it originated out of Denver (KOA), but don't provide any evidence of that - and say October 1930, anyway. I haven't found anything else connecting it to KOA and/or Denver.

Thanks!

News and documentary junkies -- can you do reel transfers?

Joe Webb

One of the early reel collections that OTRR Purchasing Group acquired has a lot of news and documentary programs, and especially Meet the Press from the 1950s and 1960s
Most all of these programs are from disc, master tape, or close to source
They need to be transferred

Because these are special items, and we know there are some OTR fans who specialize in this area, we wanted to know if there is someone who can transfer them and can also give them the attention they deserve

We have a group working on reels from the Hehn Memorial Collection, the Kelez/Falk Collection, and now this collection -- we are a bit overwhelmed and backlogged with more of the mainstream entertainment items -- and could use some more transfer resources

Please contact me if you have any interest and capability in this area

THANKS!!!

Story

YESTERDAY USA has been streaming live on the Internet (and satellite radio) since 1983. For almost forty years we have been providing old-time radio programs, along with original documentaries and exclusive celebrity interviews to help preserve past network broadcasting. Historians, scholars, museum curators and other luminaries have been guests. During the coming year we plan to produce a number of documentaries and the costs involved for production require us to launch this Kickstarter.

Documentary #1  THE LIFE AND CAREER OF RONALD COLMAN

With the cooperation of Ronald Colman's daughter, this audio documentary will feature memories and recollections from people who worked with Ronald Colman, including an exclusive interview with Colman's biographer.

Ronald Colman

Documentary #2  THE JACK BENNY RADIO SHOW

This documentary will feature interviews with the script writers of THE JACK BENNY PROGRAM, and children who appeared on the program known as part of the Jack Benny beavers. Hosted by Larry and John Gassman.

Documentary #3  A TRIBUTE TO JOAN BENNY

Joan Benny, daughter of Mary Livingstone and Jack Benny, will provide memories and recollections of her father. Not only will be recounting the days when she finished his autobiography and got it published, but she will recount little known stories that she never included in the book.

Jack Benny and Eddie "Rochester" Anderson

Documentary #4  A HISTORY OF THE LONE RANGER

The masked man who rode the plains to combat cattle rustlers, bank robbers, masked bandits and murderers, was assisted by his faithful Indian companion from 1933 to 1954. The radio program aired three days a week and gave multiple generations more than 3,000 thrilling adventures. The history of that popular western program will be a highlight of the year with exclusive interviews with cast members from the radio show, and commentary by historian/author Martin Grams.

Clayton Moore and Jay Silverheels as The Lone Ranger and Tonto

Documentary #5  JIMMY STEWART'S RADIO CAREER

Many people know Jimmy Stewart from his motion pictures but few know he had a career on radio. The most popular was a cowboy western known as The Six Shooter, which he played the title lead. This documentary will feature clips from numerous radio broadcasts, commentary from historians and an exclusive interview with his daughter Kelly.

James Stewart and Jean Arthur in MR. SMITH GOES TO WASHINGTON

Documentaries, like any production, have overhead, which is why we are asking for your support. We do not sell the documentaries, nor release them commercially. We offer them to the masses for free on our Internet radio station. But financial reimbursement is needed. Please help us keep this momentum going for another year. We hope you continue enjoying the 24-hour programming the radio station will continue to provide in this new year.

The old episode circulating as 50-9-1 Drug of Death is actually 50-9-18 Confession, the story of Jerry Bryant.

This would definitely be a good set to read the accompanying notes, especially if you don't normally look at the documents included with Maintained sets. Don did a lot of work sorting out what is what, and his notes explain what the different files are. We have a lead on the original scripts but have so far not been able to get copies of them which might further help sort out the episodes.

I didn't see this one in the Top Secret distro

50-09-01 The Drug of Death

Goldin has this

Top Secret. October 19, 1950. Program #16. NBC net. "The Drug Of Death". Sustaining. The program title is also known as, "The Dream That Meant Death." Baroness Karen Geza goes to Shanghai to break up an opium ring. The communists are using the drug to fight the nationalist Chinese army. "With opium, once is forever." The program is referred to as, "Assignment 16." The recording is unedited tape, with no music cues. Ilona Massey, Fred Collins (announcer), Harry W. Junkin (writer, producer, director). 28:05. Audio Condition: Excellent. Incomplete.

But they are different.
