Martin told me that hardcover editions were delayed when the publisher stopped making them. He had to find another publisher. The paperbacks were sent out a few weeks ago.

Ah. I got the paperback version. Too bad Martin has to deal with that. And Bruce, I had no idea it went up for preorder that long ago? I just ordered mine via his Kickstarter this spring I believe. Got the shows, too.

I ordered the softcover version as well. I guess the Pony Express is taking its time getting here.

Re: FKB

Hi Ryan,

You sent me
FKB520911 "Watching the Dog"
FKB520918 "Weekend Activity"
FKB520925 "Should Women Work"
and
Father Knows Best 52-08-25-1 "No title" - Betty tells the family she want to get married.

The quality of the first three was excellent. Clean, rich, smooth audio. There was one tiny glitch in the audience laughter early on in "Watching the Dog."

The last one was ... fine. It was perfectly audible, but had thinner voice quality. This was more noticeable at the beginning, but that could have been my ear adjusting to the sound.

It felt as though there might have been some sort of background noise that someone had removed, taking a bit of the richness of the voices with it.

None of them had any other glitches, dropouts, or odd distortions. I like FKB. I'd happily listen to another set.

Claire

Two new resources have been added to our sites: Thanks to the scanning efforts of Martin Grams and John Nicholson we've added issues 115-129 and 131-143 of Bob Burchett's defunct Old Time Radio Digest to our main site (https://otrr.org/Pages/Publications/magz_otr_digest.htm) and our collection of Mystery is My Hobby (not a Moderated set) has been made live in our library under "M" (http://www.otrrlibrary.org/m.html).

Thanks, Claire! Looking at both Haendiges' and Goldin's logs, the 51-08-23 episode appears to be episode 1 (per Goldin's description) because it's the same script as the audition but with the Maxwell advertisement and the same script as 1953-11-12 (which advertises Post Bran Flakes).

Would like to upgrade Father Knows Best 1952-04-17 New Washing Machine

Our copy is listenable but not a pleasant listen. The four or five versions I found easily with a search all sound to be the same copy, just with different running times (interestingly). If you have a clean copy, please send it my way.

Hi Ryan,

My last message didn't go through for some reason. Tried via IM and am trying again here.

Best,

Claire

FKB521113 - The Missing Pipes - sponsored by Post. Quality was great.

FKB521120 - The Phantom Prowler - sponsored by Post. Quality was great.

FKB521211 - A Worried Waitress - sponsored by Post. Wrong title! No waitresses, worried or otherwise. It is based on a Paul West script named "Lesson in Citizenship," that was recycled into a tv episode that ran on 10 Oct 1954.Jerry Haendige's log is incorrect. (http://www.otrsite.com/logs/logf1025.htm).

FKB532328 - The Kids Revolt - sponsored by Post. Quality is great. Script by Paul West.

FKB521225 - Kids Look for a Present - sponsored by Post. Script by Paul West. The volume is lower. Audible needle skip that gradually disappears by 2:30.

That was fun. More?

Claire,
I haven't had a chance to listen to the 1952-12-11 episode yet, but is there a description on Goldin's log that seems to match the story of the file I sent you?

FKB - Is "A Worried Waitress" 11 Dec 1952 mislabeled?

C. Nava

Hi Ryan,

I understand your concerns. Please have someone else check my work. I don't get offended and it's always a good idea to make sure. Below is a detailed record of my research.
 1. Goldin
 2. Haedinges
 3. Amazon Prime
 4. IMDB
 5. Conclusions
1. Goldin. Neither episode ("A Worried Waitress" or "Lesson in Citizenship") is listed. I've taken a screenshot and added the link: http://radiogoldindex.com/cgi-local/p2.cgi?ProgramName=Father+Knows+Best

2. Here's the page from Jerry Haendiges' index:

A Location Number of "111" indicates I have the show in my Collection, but they haven't yet been assigned a Location number. Please order These by Description Only.
www.otrsite.com
3. The script was reworked for television as "Lesson in Citizenship," which aired on 10 Oct 1954. The television version is free to view with Amazon Prime. Here's the link: https://www.amazon.com/gp/video/detail/B075V73PX8/ref=atv_hm_hom_1_c_iEgOEZ_2_2
Maybe he didn't always know best, but beginning in 1954 insurance salesman Jim Anderson (Robert Young) of Springfield, Ohio, was America's favorite head of household.
www.amazon.com
4. IMDB wasn't much help either, but I'm attaching it so that you know that I pursued the research in as many places as I could. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0578442/
Directed by Peter Tewksbury. With Robert Young, Jane Wyatt, Elinor Donahue, Billy Gray. Jim Anderson, dismayed at his children's laziness, lectures them in the importance of good citizenship and cheerful volunteering. When each of them later heed his advice and try to do their part in the community, their efforts end up complicating his own life in unexpected ways.
www.imdb.com
5. Conclusions: according to Haedinge's excellent log, Nov 27, 1952 was Thanksgiving Day, so if there was a broadcast on that date, #142 would undoubtedly have been about Thanksgiving, not citizenship. Per the end credits of the radio episode currently known as "A Worried Waitress," Paul West wrote the script, and it was sponsored by Post, so It seems logical that it was in the same run. Possibly 137? 143? 144?

It would also be logical that if the show was called "Lesson in Citizenship" in the television show, it was probably called "Lesson in Citizenship" in the original radio show.

The conclusions are speculative, of course, but the material might be useful and it was a nice little exercise in research and deduction.

I'd be happy to listen to more shows if you wish.

😊

Claire

You’re welcome Ryan! I seem to have downloaded 118 episodes from Archive in April 2015. Those don't seem to be on Archive any longer unless I just can’t find it.

Hi Claire, I think my message came across wrong. I'm sure you're correct in your conclusion, I just meant to ask if you saw a different episode description that better matched the audio file you listened to. Then we might get it labeled more accurately. In the meantime, I'm following up on a lead to someone who - unbeknownst to me, and not an OTRR volunteer - has been working on a high quality set of the show for some time.
