Paul,

Is there any prohibition to your posting the article as an attachment here to read?  Just curious.  Also interested to know what the response (if any) is from the readers of that publication.

Older Purchasing Group files headed to the OTRR Library

Paul Kornman

OTRR has a Purchasing Group that uses members' dues to gather new material.
After a certain period of time, that material was to make its way to the OTRR Library for the general public.
The procedure and guidelines for this process had not been established previously, so there is a bit of a backlog.
I'm pleased to tell you that soon (I expect by the end of June if not before) we will have at least
4,000 new files added to our current Library of over 100,000 files.

Many of these "older" Purchasing Group files (there are over 20,000) are duplicates of existing files
(they may have made their way to the Library through other channels) and it's slow going to do the comparisons.

Hi Ryan,

I was curious about Frank Graham's time as the voice of Jeff Regan so looked up some info on him.  Came up with a short bio.  If you can use it, it's attached.

I actually like his version of Regan better than the ones done by Webb.

Use compression to normalize the signal,ie. bring high and low levels closer to each other.

Thanks, Ryan. I???m listening now???some of it fades in and out from over-the-air reception, and some of the recording does seem to have good and weak spots.

This may also be beyond what I can really do. I can try noise reduction, but so far it???s not really a noise problem, but weak AM reception that fades in and out. In a crazy way, there???s a nostalgic feel to the fading in and out that I personally haven???t heard in a long time!

I can try to equalize the audio levels somewhat if that is of interest, but I???m not sure if that???s what Philip wants????

If so, I???m happy to try. And export as MP3?

I got the impression the original poster was wondering if the audio could be cleaned up a bit, did I read that right? I don't have those skills myself.

I largely help with voicing things for the group, but am happy to jump in here. I am happy to convert a FLAC file to mp3 or whatever is desired; I just can???t get the link to open.

But I???m happy to help!

Hi Philip,

I hope someone in this group has the technical ability to work with the file on the link you provided and is willing to help. My experience has been that when I have asked for assistance in this group on technical matters beyond my capacity no one has replied except for one member in North Carolina whose email address I unfortunately lost. Perhaps he will see your message and contact you.

Best regards,

Larry

Hi Larry,

Actually, this wasn't 'my' post or 'find', I just forwarded the message
from the Boatanchor group. Dave, AB5S was the original poster. I DID
DL the FLAC file from the listed URL, but at 611 MB it's way too large
to forward. Somebody that is able to work with the file needs to go to
the URL and DL the file to work with. I did try to DL the smaller MP3
File, but that's a bad link. NO tape, the file was recorded from a
"wire spool" on an old fashioned wire recorder. . .

Again, here is the direct URL for the FLAC file. The DL arrow is in the
upper right corner.

Hello Philip,

Ninety years old! How exciting to run across such a treasure at an
estate sale. There is a business in my neighborhood that I know could
digitize it because I just had it do some work digitizing some OTR
cassettes to a wav format. There may be a few members of this group
who have reel-to-reel recorders (I think spools and reels are
synonymous) and the skills to edit the tape, but if no one volunteers
to help you out please contact me and I will share my experience with
MTEK Media with you. I now know the owner, and the last time I was in
his office he showed me some reels that he has. I deduced that he has
a reel-to-reel recorder, and I will ask him what he would charge to
work on the tape if you wish. The order I placed with him was more
extensive and involved transferring the cassette tapes to CDs for some
of the people I mailed them to, DVDs for others, and flash drives for
others depending upon the preference they had expressed to me. I
thought the charge was reasonable and was happy to pay the bill. I
did not ask any of the people I mailed them to for reimbursement.

By the way, I think it is completely appropriate that you sent the
message to this group, and I'm glad you did.

Larry

Some of you may remember that I refurbished a Webster Chicago
81-1 Wire Recorder awhile back.
At a recent estate sale, I find some very old recording wire spools.
One of them contained a 30-minute jewel.
The person making the recording didn't mention the date,
but did say he was at "2028 20th Street, Kenosha, Wisconsin."
Then he begins listening to music on his home radio and records
as he is tuning around.

The only station ID one hears is at the beginning of the recording:
CBL from Toronto, Canada. You can hear the many stations in
the back ground, static crashes, fades and a band surprisingly crowded.
He's looking for music he likes, so he doesn't dwell on "talking,"
and he seems to prefer "Glenn-Miller-ish" "BIg Band" music.
But it's the sounds of tuning-around I find interesting.

This recording is about 90 years old. The quality is not good,
both from the effects of time in an external storage shed
in the Texas heat and from a poor level control causing
the recorder to being over-driven and "microphone
next to the speaker" coupling. The quality is not good.
But the material is worth preserving, IMHO.
I have not edited the recording. If someone would like
to work with it and trim the excess, perhaps improve the
quality with processing, I'd enjoy hearing your efforts.

I've uploaded 30 minutes of the recording to Google Drive:
A High-Def .FLAC file of 611 MB at:
</br<><http://www.qsl.net/ko6bb/%3cbr>https://tinyurl.com/y7bhnwhl/><br< a=""> /> > and a smaller .MP3 file, 59 MB at:
<</br<><https://tinyurl.com/y7bhnwhl/%3e%3cbr>https://tinyurl.com/y7bhnwhl<br>https://tinyurl.com/yby5utd7/><br< a=""> /> > I'll also be uploading it to a couple of Facebook radio
groups for streaming.
Please share the links to whomever you think might enjoy.
