You are welcome Gordon, and I am always happy to know that anyone actually reads my posts!  That makes writing them worthwhile.

I like the realism in One Man's Family, and how descriptive it is of the Barbour family home and the Sea Cliff community.  It does feel like a soap opera, but John Dunning (p.514  of On the Air") refers to it as "the great American radio serial."  The first sentence about it in Jim Cox's Historical Dictionary of American Radio Soap Operas (p. 161) is an outright tribute: "Categorically among the best literary series that radio produced (earning a Peabody for excellence and winner of 47 national awards by the time it left the air), the drama was a profound statement of life as it unfolded in an upper middle-class American family."

I hope you listen to more episodes of it when you feel like doing a little time traveling to an era that has now passed into history.

Larry

Thanks indeed Larry. Your posts have indeed been fascinating. They even got me to listen to an episode of One Man's Family since it was by Morse. I love his adventure stuff and wish there were more episodes of I Love a Mystery available. The episodic nature certainly has a "soap" feel but they are awesome tales.

Hi Larry,

Thanks for your informative postings.  Your rare OTR show contributions prompted me to look into some of my collection from the late 60s and 70s.  One of the shows I listened to growing up in the 50s was called The Woman In My House, written by Carlton E. Morse.  There are very few of these shows available currently.  I tried getting photos and biographies of the principal actors and was able to find information on all but one.  There was nothing I could find for Janet Scott, who played Jessie Carter, the matriarch of the family.  A web site called OTR Downloads listed all the shows they had for her (Lux Theater, Cavalcade of America, Family Theater & Heartbeat Theater).  But I couldn't find any biographical information or photos at all.  Since she was on the Woman In My House for 8 years, you would think there would something, but so far I haven't found anything.

Would you have any information on the the program or on Janet Scott?

Talk to you again soon.

Hi Wes,

I am familiar with the program, and have an episode that was recorded from KNBC-San Francisco on December 22, 1955.  The most interesting fact about it to me is that it was set in Miami.  It is the only radio soap opera I am aware whose characters lived there except for The Goldbergs, and I think Molly and Jake may have moved there in their later years.

The Woman in My House is mentioned in both John Dunning's On the Air (p. 724) and Jim Cox's Historical Dictionary of American Radio Soap Operas (p.247-48).  Both of them list Janet Scott as having performed the role of Jessie Carter.  I have also heard one other episode, I think, and they are pretty good and very reminiscent of One Man's Family.

I hope you can find more information about Janet and more episodes of the program to enjoy.

Larry

Episode Title: "The Death of the Playboy"

Broadcast Date: Wednesday, February 13, 1952

Network: CBS

Summary: Judge A.J. Adams has retired from the bench after more than forty years of service.  He is asked for help by police Lieutenant Tommy Ross after Ronald Winters is shot to death one night in the home of his stepmother Agatha Winters.  The most important clue in the case is that Ronald is killed just a few days before his 25th birthday, at which time he would have inherited the bulk of his late stepfather's estate.  The prime suspect is Julie Young, Ronald's girlfriend who is a nightclub singer at The Bluebird Cafe.  Other suspects are Mrs. Winters herself, who retains control of the estate when Ronald dies, and her secretary Katherine Shaw, who also stands to benefit financially from Ronald's death.

Notes: (1) Miss Shaw has been reading Emile Zola's novel The Human Beast; (2) Next week's episode is announced as "one of the most unusual cases on record, The Cat's Paw", thus indicating that at least two were aired.  John Dunning does not list the series in On the Air, so I am unable to determine the number of episodes that were broadcast on CBS or any other network; (3) There is a promo at the end for The Jack Benny Show which notes that Jack is on the radio every Sunday night.  The announcer concludes with "This is the CBS Radio Network."

A Review On The Internet Archive

Larry Maupin

Hello to all members.  I have written a review of the set of episodes that Ryan Ellett did such a splendid job of uploading to the Internet Archive. The link he provided, which is included in this message, still works.  Clicking on it will take you to the collection where you will see all the episodes ready to be heard and will also see the review.

I wrote the review for a couple of reasons,  First, I am so proud of that set and I think it reflects well on our group that we are sharing these gems with every other OTR enthusiast who has a computer with a sound card.  So far 97 people have viewed the collection, but reviews usually increase the number of visitors and I hope that many more people will decide to look at the collection as a result of the long and detailed review.

The second reason is that some members of our groups might decide to listen to the episodes and even to write reviews of their own on this collection or on something else in the Archive that interests them.  I had so much fun listening to these programs and writing episode summaries of them,  and hope that many other people will enjoy hearing them as much as I have.

Many years ago (1970s) I saw a local, Monroe NC, woman who had her mother's Atwater Kent gold medallion awarded at a 1929 competition in Nashville, TN  As a rabid collector of 1920s radios I almost lost my mind on seeing it!....  I did not have much money at all and thought I could not muster more than $300 for it.  She said that she had no interest in selling....  Unfortunately the owner has passed away with no clues to what happened to the medallion.

My call is KC0PWA. I have an extra class license but last I checked (several years ago) there were no 4-digit call signs that I liked. I sold my Yaesu probably ten years ago and have not done any hamming since, though I renewed my license in the last year or two. My bedside radio is a Grundig shortwave radio but rarely do I get on the SW bands anymore. I think the ease of internet communication around the world has definitely hampered wider interest in both of these hobbies.
