Destination Freedom - Correction and clarification notes
Richard Davenport
Ryan, I checked the ones you mentioned in the Don Frey set. I did note that the one listed as 95 should be 94. Destination Freedom - 0094 - 50-06-18 - The Case of the Congressman's Train Ride - Atty. Richard W. Westbrooks. The others were able to give me some of the names of the persons that the shows were highlighting.... This is a work in progress but with all this input we are gradually building a good set with clean names. Rick |

Agreed, they shared a name and very broadly a historical theme but little else. Ryan www.RyanEllett.com The Old Time Radio Researchers "Saving the Past for the Future" www.OTRR.org www.OTRRLibrary.org

Re: Destination Freedom
Anyone :
Just tried to pull up one of the destination freedom files. The list is there in the library but there does not seem to be any content in the files. Is there someone in the group that could help me find the files ? I am seeing lots of posts on the series from others. If someone could advise I would really appreciate it. Thanks Steve |

My dog just pawed the keyboard on my laptop and sent that before I was done :) Anyway, they really are two different shows, just with the same name. That solves the numbering problem. On Sun, Jul 5, 2020 at 5:27 PM Brian Kavanaugh <brian@...> wrote:

Ok, a little work and research later I have cleaned up the files to a more sensible state. I would love to trade for any shows to fill in gaps. I added a few from Archive and some from YouTube. ========================================= M:\OTR\D\Destination Freedom (1948-1950)\ ========================================= Destination Freedom - 0001 - 48-06-27 - The Knock-Kneed Man (Crispus Attuckus).mp3 Destination Freedom - 0002 - 48-07-04 - The Railway To Freedom - The Story Of Harriet Tubman.mp3 Destination Freedom - 0003 - 48-07-11 - The Dark Explorers - Moors In New Spain.mp3 Destination Freedom - 0004 - 48-07-18 - The Denmark Vesey Story.mp3 Destination Freedom - 0005 - 48-07-25 - The Making Of A Man - Frederick Douglass #1.mp3 Destination Freedom - 0006 - 48-08-01 - The Key To Freedom - Frederick Douglass #2.mp3 Destination Freedom - 0007 - 48-08-08 - The Heart Of Georga Cotton - Dr Ulysses Grant Dailey.mp3 Destination Freedom - 0009 - 48-08-22 - The Arctic Biography - The Story Of Mathew Henson.mp4 Destination Freedom - 0011 - 48-09-05 - The Poet In Pine Mills - James Weldon Johnson.mp3 Destination Freedom - 0014 - 48-09-26 - The Shakespeare Of Harlem - Langston Hughes.mp3 Destination Freedom - 0015 - 48-10-03 - The Citizen Toussaint.mp3 Destination Freedom - 0016 - 48-10-10 - Little David - Joe Louis.mp3 Destination Freedom - 0017 - 48-10-17 - The Boy Who Was Traded For A Horse - George Washington Carver.mp3 Destination Freedom - 0017 - 48-10-24 - Show Pre-Empted.txt Destination Freedom - 0019 - 48-11-07 - The Echoes Of Harlem - Duke Ellington.mp3 Destination Freedom - 0020 - 48-11-14 - The One Out Of Seventeen - The Story Of Mary McLeod Bethune.mp4 Destination Freedom - 0022 - 48-11-28 - The Investigator For Democracy.mp3 Destination Freedom - 0023 - 48-12-05 - The Autobiography Of A Hero - Dorie Miller.mp3 Destination Freedom - 0034 - 49-02-20 - The Peace Mediator - Dr Ralph Bunche.mp3 Destination Freedom - 0035 - 49-02-27 - The House That Paul Built.mp3 Destination Freedom - 0038 - 49-03-20 - The Story Of The Black Boy - The Story Of Richard Wright.mp3 Destination Freedom - 0039 - 49-03-27 - The Transfusion - The Story Of Dr. Charles R. Wells 95 6/18/1950 Destination Freedom (1948) The Case of the Congressman's Train Ride Richard Westbrook
and a 1983 interview with Richard Durham. His collection is on cassette so I would need to ask his son to digitize them which he is usually happy to do. I put the subject of each episode in italics so they can be checked against Goldin's descriptions to make sure we're referring to the same broadcasts.

I just finished a redo of my Destination Freedom files and with the help of Jerry H and Digital Deli I have come up with a resonable attempt at a complete listing... Near to the end the show changes format and resets the ep number to start at 1. I had to bypass that else they would mix incorrectly at the front of the other files. They have an annotation at the end of the file with the other sequential numbering... I have been able to locate additional episodes since I posted the last set to share. More are still trickling in as I check my sources. I have 37 but don’t know how many were released years ago by OTRR. Quality is okay, not great but certainly listenable. I do have one from 1950 that was from a different source and the quality is much better. I also have the WJSV entry from 09/21/1939. The set released by O TRR was from 1948/1949. Larry

A favourite show around the Galley household on Saturday mornings has been 'The Mary Lee Taylor Program'. Along with some GREAT recipes (I can vouch for many of these - Mary Lee Taylor, extended quarantine and our kitchen have combined beautifully to make some lovely meals), the story of Jim, Sally and Betsy Carter is a charming one. I know that a Certified Set was released a number of years ago, and that's what we've listened to - twice, in fact.
This morning, in passing, my wife Christiane was mourning the loss of the show and asking if there were any more. A quick check of Goldin's new site (excellent update, by the way), shows that indeed, a few more do exist. So my question is... can we get our hands on them? I know one person who would be very happy if she could hear them. I would too. Thanks; Scott |

A Title To Consider
Larry Maupin
Hello Ryan,
I think you are still working on the conversion of the twelve episodes I sent you in a link on Thursday from aiff to wav format prior to placing them on Archive.org. I recommend that you consider adding the three episodes of Moving Stories of Life from Rick Davenport's collection that I sent you which are not in the OTRR Library at this time. I think those fifteen episodes belong together by virtue of the fact that none are in the OTRR Library yet and that none may even be in circulation anywhere at present. If you are considering a title for the collection, I have been thinking about one and I recommend "A Collection of Unique Old-Time Radio Episodes." As I continue writing episode summaries on these and posting them on the Purchasing Group message board, my sense of how precious they are is reinforced every evening. They are like the gems "of purest ray serene" that languish in "the dark, unfathomed caves of ocean" unseen by human eye that Thomas Gray laments in his great poem "Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard," and our groups are bringing them to light so that they will not "waste their sweetness on the desert air." The only episode that anyone could object to as not being unique is the one of The Breakfast Club dated September 17, 1969 with the possible objection being that The Breakfast Club is not obscure enough to be included. I guess you could omit it on those grounds if you think that would be best. The only other episode in the entire group that does not belong to a lesser known program is the first Audition recording of Our Miss Brooks, but I think that one easily qualifies for inclusion because of the circumstances surrounding it. Please let me know what you think when you have time to reply. Larry

Re: Destination Freedom
Ryan - I have since picked up Woman with a Mission, a 256kbps version that Jerry shared a couple of years ago on http://www.vintageradioprograms.com/ (prompted by a request from Bob Stepno), so we're probably good on that one. But, picking up the others would be great! Larry - Yes, I would love to get a copy of that interview. My email address is brian@.... Richard - I have all those episodes, I think, but you may have better versions than what I have so far. So, I would definitely like to see what you have and how they compare to what I have. the converter I use is dbpoweramp
One of OTRR's key founders, the late Ben Kibler, turned me onto this software years ago. The 21-day trial is a real version, not a teaser limited one. The product is still maintained, and works extremely well, and has great bulk conversion features. I highly recommend it -- as Ben did -- who never led me wrong about these kinds of things. https://www.dbpoweramp.com/dmc.htm -- ---------- Suspense resource page https://sites.google.com/view/suspense-collectors-companion Suspense enhanced log https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/11XflGB-S18jQ8JPr4EV1C9aZsRM_3Dw4xlLpGqgpBiU/edit?usp=sharing The Whistler Files https://sites.google.com/view/the-whistler-files The Big Story Revealed! https://sites.google.com/view/thestoriesbehindthebigstory/ Casey, Crime Photographer episode analysis https://bluenotebulletin.blogspot.com/ |

Ryan, that sounds very good. Perhaps you will post a link to the Archived set to this group when you have uploaded it so that every member will have access to the best episodes I uploaded. You might also consider including the three episodes of
Moving Stories of Life that are not already in the OTRR Library and that are in the "Maupin" folder. These came from Rick Davenport's collection. They are already in mp3 format so will not need to be converted. But I do think that those three belong
in spirit with the twelve episodes in the "CD" folder as being the best ones to hear and the most valuable to add to anyone's collection.
I am about to post a summary to the Purchasing Group of the first Audition produced for
Our Miss Brooks, which is one of the fifteen. I'm thinking there is enough new material in these episodes for more than one article to be written about them, and I plan to do that.
Happy 4th to you and to all other members!

Ryan, I am really glad you have undertaken to convert the aiff programs to wav. The best outcome will be if you then make them accessible for all members of the group to listen to if they are interested. I cannot find a link, but the three members who
requested links earlier today will be able to hear all the episodes if you do that.
As for creating an Archive set, do you mean one to place on the Internet Archive site that would make them available to all OTR enthusiasts? I think that would be great, and if they still allow people to post reviews I could do that and try to let other
people know just how unique and wonderful they are. Two are audition tapes and several others are rebroadcasts of the first episode in the series or of the only surviving episode in the series to which they belong.
Thank you for everything.

Hello Ryan,
Yes, they are from my collection. I recently acquired them on cassette tapes and have had them digitized so that I can share them with other members of the OTR groups to which I belong. Yesterday I sent them to sixteen people, including you. Several
of the recipients have replied and said they got the link but have not had time to listen to any of the episodes yet. A few other people who were not on the list have asked for links, three of whom you will see have posted here today.
The main problem I have encountered so far is that the local company that did the digitizing used the AIFF format, which one person has written me that he cannot play on his computer. I'm not sure what to do about that. Having cassettes digitized is
costly, but you will not believe how fascinating these shows are to listen to until you do it yourself. I consider every penny well spent.
Just so there will be no confusion by any other members who received the link, the best episodes I sent were those on the three
Same Time, Same Station programs, the one of The Breakfast Club, the two labeled "Music OTR" and the five episodes of
Moving Stories of Life, all of which are from Rick Davenport's collection and three of which I have never seen anywhere else and that I am pretty sure are not in circulation at this time. All of these are priceless.
Best regards,

Don Frey has the following episodes listed in his collection: 8 8/15/1948 Destination Freedom (1948) Truth Goes to Washington Sojourner Truth 24 12/12/1948 Destination Freedom (1948) The Pied Piper Versus Paul Revere Albert Merritt 36 3/6/1949 Destination Freedom (1948) Do Something! Be Someone! Canada Lee 40 4/3/1949 Destination Freedom (1948) Pagan Poet Countee Cullen 41 4/10/1949 Destination Freedom (1948) Woman with a Mission Ida B. Wells 95 6/18/1950 Destination Freedom (1948) The Case of the Congressman's Train Ride Richard Westbrook
and a 1983 interview with Richard Durham. His collection is on cassette so I would need to ask his son to digitize them which he is usually happy to do. I put the subject of each episode in italics so they can be checked against Goldin's descriptions to make sure we're referring to the same broadcasts.

Ok, I received the disc of the Minnesota School Of The Air yesterday and offloaded them. The file names were cleaned up and a few dates partially filled in. This adds about 90 shows to my collection. I have included a link here to grab a zip file of all the shows that I now have. TransferNow

Ryan, that sounds very good. Perhaps you will post a link to the Archived set to this group when you have uploaded it so that every member will have access to the best episodes I uploaded. You might also consider including the three episodes of Moving Stories of Life that are not already in the OTRR Library and that are in the "Maupin" folder. These came from Rick Davenport's collection. They are already in mp3 format so will not need to be converted. But I do think that those three belong in spirit with the twelve episodes in the "CD" folder as being the best ones to hear and the most valuable to add to anyone's collection. I am about to post a summary to the Purchasing Group of the first Audition produced for Our Miss Brooks, which is one of the fifteen. I'm thinking there is enough new material in these episodes for more than one article to be written about them, and I plan to do that. Happy 4th to you and to all other members! The material will also be added to the OTRR library but having it in a single set for download on Archve can be a bit more convenient. It would be available then to the entire public. We don't have to leave it up there forever. Ryan www.RyanEllett.com The Old Time Radio Researchers "Saving the Past for the Future" www.OTRR.org www.OTRRLibrary.org

Ryan, I am really glad you have undertaken to convert the aiff programs to wav. The best outcome will be if you then make them accessible for all members of the group to listen to if they are interested. I cannot find a link, but the three members who requested links earlier today will be able to hear all the episodes if you do that. As for creating an Archive set, do you mean one to place on the Internet Archive site that would make them available to all OTR enthusiasts? I think that would be great, and if they still allow people to post reviews I could do that and try to let other people know just how unique and wonderful they are. Two are audition tapes and several others are rebroadcasts of the first episode in the series or of the only surviving episode in the series to which they belong. Thank you for everything. I'm in the process of doing it right now. If you'd like me to create an Archive set of these shows that you can link to, Larry, I'd be happy to do so. Hello Ryan, Yes, they are from my collection. I recently acquired them on cassette tapes and have had them digitized so that I can share them with other members of the OTR groups to which I belong. Yesterday I sent them to sixteen people, including you. Several of the recipients have replied and said they got the link but have not had time to listen to any of the episodes yet. A few other people who were not on the list have asked for links, three of whom you will see have posted here today. The main problem I have encountered so far is that the local company that did the digitizing used the AIFF format, which one person has written me that he cannot play on his computer. I'm not sure what to do about that. Having cassettes digitized is costly, but you will not believe how fascinating these shows are to listen to until you do it yourself. I consider every penny well spent. Just so there will be no confusion by any other members who received the link, the best episodes I sent were those on the three Same Time, Same Station programs, the one of The Breakfast Club, the two labeled "Music OTR" and the five episodes of Moving Stories of Life, all of which are from Rick Davenport's collection and three of which I have never seen anywhere else and that I am pretty sure are not in circulation at this time. All of these are priceless. I have had very little feedback, but most of it has been negative. I will say that the best material I uploaded was on five cassette tapes which were digitized by a local business that chose the AIFF format for them. These include three episodes of Same Time, Same Station, one of The Breakfast Club, and two labeled Music OTR on the files. The best of the other episodes was five of Moving Stories of Life, which are in mp3 format. I probably should just have sent the links to those and left it at that. But I hope everyone received those in good order and can listen to them.
