Jack Benny Clips, pt. 2

Ryan Ellett

I forgot to add, I would suggest steering clear of any bits involving Rochester as without any context, this character is going to be very off-putting to most younger listeners and I don't want us getting any sort of negative consequences by the platform just as we're getting up and running.

Jack Benny clips

Ryan Ellett

I'm planning to put together a bunch of TikTok videos to schedule for release while I'm on vacation coming up. I'd like to do a few with Jack Benny. I don't have any particular favor bits but would love to have some submitted that we can turn into videos that are then linked to our YouTube page. If you are willing to do this, it would be much appreciated! Please try to be specific about episode and the time stamp so I can go right to the bits you all are suggesting. I don't have time to listen to numerous Benny episodes in their entirety, as much as I'd like to. 1-2 minutes max is the ideal time.

Thank you!

BIG NEWS in the Suspense 80th anniversary observances. They are detailed at https://sites.google.com/view/suspense80th/home

Today, June 17, 2022, at 10am US ET the 24 episode block begins at Stay Tuned America. Keith Scott joins me as himself and as numerous Suspense guests.

We learned yesterday that the block of programs will also be streaming on Yesterday USA Blue network starting Saturday, June 18, at 6am ET. At 7pm Saturday, Keith and I join hosts Walden Hughes, Larry and John Gassman. Call in! The number and other details are at the anniversary site.

The Radio Talking Book Service has requested another four weeks of Suspense episodes and discussion. The two sessions that have been streamed so far have had very positive and higher volume of response, leading to this request. Details are at the anniversary site. This weekend's offering is at 11pm Saturday and is repeated at 10pm Sunday. The episodes are A Week Ago Wednesday and Death on My Hands.

Special SUSPENSE event starts Friday June 17 at 10amET on Stay Tuned America

Joe Webb

Tomorrow morning, Friday, June 17, 2022 at 10amET, starts the block of 24 Suspense episodes on Stay Tuned America. Voice actor and impressionist Keith Scott and I scripted episode introductions with him and as various Suspense guests. Some will bring a smirk and a chuckle, especially the ones with Orson Welles, Jack Benny, Frank Lovejoy, Ronald Colman, Hans Conried, Howard Duff, and others. There are others where the historical backdrop is a bit serious. All in all, it's a well-rounded collection of some of the series' best episodes.
It's at https://staytunedamerica.net/ which is also accessible through the TuneIn and Audacy apps.
More news about the 80th anniversary events to be announced shortly! Check https://sites.google.com/view/suspense80th/home more events, streaming, and download details.

Re: The Olan Soule Let George Do It Episodes

No,  there was a series of Let George Do It produced starring Olan Soule and aired on Mutual and with a different sponsor.

We currently have, “The Ghost of Ireland Betty” in the existing OTRR set (this was a performance of an episode from the original run that was lost.):

There are two others.

Or would you like me to send them along?

Theater Five 58th Anniversary

Joe Webb

Tomorrow, June 16, 2022, is the 58th anniversary of the first studio production day of Theater Five. The more we research this series the more fascinating it is. The first production day was for "Hit and Run" by veteran radio writer Robert Cenedella, and has a Whistler-ish conclusion. https://theaterfive.blogspot.com/2022/02/t51-hit-and-run.html
Nick Palmer has been writing fresh plot summaries of each episode, with the four missing episode plotlines handled by outside documentation. It's been a stellar effort. Researcher Karl Schadow has been assisting in finding archives of show documents and newspaper details. Many, many others have supplied us with audio collections for us to sift through and find better copies of T5 episodes... and they are still assisting us as there are reel collections still on their way to us.
The Theater Five story needs to be told and told well. We're getting much closer to doing so. The Theater Five blog posts an upgraded episode every day, and will do so until the last one is done at the end of October.
Resources about the series and the research project are at https://sites.google.com/view/t5-project/home/ Watch the video presentation about the history and backroom meanderings there.

Yo ho ho and a bottle of Bundaberg Rum

You folks may be interested in the lower half of this email which is a comic strip based on a late 1940's Australian radio series hosted by Ovaltine and featuring Blackbeard.

I'm not sure if any copies survived.

In the US, all your heroes grew up to be cowboys! Or maybe space cowboys!

But Down Under, they grew up to be Pirates!

Until they didn't.

In the 30's and 40's, there were at least two popular comic strip series whose protagonists took to the sea in ships seeking booty. Lots and lots of booty :)

The best was MIDDY MALONE by Syd Miller.

It was reprinted many times. Unfortunately I don't have scans of any. Want ... NEED ...  :(

Middy Malone
Books
Middy Malone, a book of pirates (1941) 24 pages
https://ausreprints.net/issue/6795
Middy Malone and the South Sea pirates (1942) 20 pages
https://ausreprints.net/issue/74444
Middy Malone in the lost world (1943) 20 pages
https://ausreprints.net/series/5661
The further adventures of Middy Malone : a book of pirates (1944) 24 pages
https://ausreprints.net/issue/91115
Middy Malone's magazine (Fatty Finn Publications 1947-1950) 25 issues. v1#1-v1#12, v2#1-v2#12, v3#1
https://ausreprints.net/series/4336
Middy Malone's Monster Folio (Fatty Finn Publications 1948) 144 pages
https://ausreprints.net/issue/78482
Middy Malone's bumper book (Fatty Finn Publications 194?) 192 pages, Has 6 coverless "Middy Malones Magazine"
https://ausreprints.net/issue/17599

But I do have scans. 53 in fact. Find at https://ilovecomixarchive.box.com/s/pqrjm2ydbbberw4z4ivz2sy9dn8bytwt

Miller, like other Australia artists, travelled to the US as the depression approached. He spent 2 years in New York attempting to sell MIDDY and surprisingly failed.

I have more Miller at https://ilovecomixarchive.box.com/s/is9cksbypk4nbreib4nf2s6u2twrp5lh but he's probably best known for his FATTY FINN -- see https://ilovecomixarchive.box.com/s/w4nwt5jux9ws664nb9ga1zobbs0l76vh .

Read about Miller at https://www.lambiek.net/artists/n/nicholls_sydney_w.htm

He also created a science fiction strip, RED GREGORY AND THE GLASS MEN in late-30s Smith's Weekly. An underground realm, cloaked figures, rocket planes, battle scenes, sensuous women ... oh my! See https://ilovecomixarchive.box.com/s/pqqazwf0025e1czs9ti4nfv7umqnitac

-------

Then there's SEA ROVER, an ad strip designed to introduce a radio program for the kiddies and fatten them up by adding Ovaltine to their milk. Creators unknown.

I've ingested lots of Ovaltine in my life but couldn't find any radio shows. I'm not even sure they still exist. I was curious if the titles list in my Sea Rover Log also match the rafio episodes. A newspaper search at Trove offered no clues.

I do however have 177 scans covering the 81 strips that appeared in the Melbourne Argus, Sydney Daily Telegraph and Superman All Color Comic; the latter were swiped from Jim Zanotto's AusReprint site while he slept. Shhh ...don't tell him :)

I had to number, rather than date, the strips so they sorted correctly.

What I know about the strip itself comes from FaceBook posts by Danie; Best, Ian Chambers, Roger Stitson and Zanotto.

Find at https://ilovecomixarchive.box.com/s/7dfdou4v4tvo71q2kjglwtlhtd8ngxe0

Enjoy

Art Lortie

PS -- I'm told-- don't really know since coffee and water are the only drinks on my menu -- that Bundaberg Rum is the drink of choice in Australia among the inebriated, even on land.

This episode from 1945 in the OTRR library actually has the credits at the end, and does list Alfred Bester as the writer. So, it would appear he was the writer for that version of the series as well.

Re: Alfred Bester on Radio

The Charlie Chan aired 1935-36. That seems too early for the newly graduated Bester, though he married actress Rolly in 1936

But her first credit seems to be 1940? (and Alfred in 1939); so it seems he helped her career rather than vice versa.

I need to read more. :)

Art, here is what I wrote on Bester in my book on radio writers. It doesn't mean all of the series mentioned are available. (Ignore the typo in the very first line!)

Thank you!

Searching for a reference led me to an additional script --

The story [Walking Dead aka Fondly Fahrenheit from CBS Radio Mystery Theater] was adapted as a teleplay in 1959 under the title Murder And The Android, an episode of NBC’s Sunday Showcase. But the version I want to tell you about is one that I hadn’t realized existed, until just a few days ago! Bester had again adapted his story, and again changed it’s name! Here is Alfred Bester’s own radio drama adaptation of Fondly Fahrenheit, from 1976 He called it The Walking Dead!

Bester also wrote at least one script (still to be determined) for THE WEIRD CIRCLE ca. 1944.
