Re: OTRR Library - Back online

Robert Lozier

Thanks very much to all that made the transfer happen..... I'm not very good at searching, but this group's website with it's traditional search has worked well for me in finding music, variety and comedy programs and those non-entertainment programs (instruction, news, opinion, history) that help me to better understand the first 50 years of broadcasting in the USA.  I do enjoy the other more popular (today) broadcast genres of the day but OTRR has definitely helped me broaden my perspectives....

Happy 90th Birthday to Suspense actor and writer.... Ellen Burstyn??!!

Joe Webb

Edited

Actor Ellen Burstyn turned 90 years old on December 7, and she has a Suspense history few are aware of. Burstyn is only one of two performers to appear on Suspense who won a Tony, an Emmy, and an Oscar (Thomas Mitchell is the other). She appeared on Suspense 8 times in the 1959-1960 period when the show moved back to New York. She also wrote two of the scripts. I know this seems unfamiliar to most everyone, but it's one of those "Believe it or Not!" types of stories.

Burstyn's birth name was Edna Rae Gillooly, and she used multiple names as she began her acting career. She settled on the name "Ellen McRae," but would sometimes go to auditions using another name. She had some roles on Broadway in the late 1950s where she met and married Paul Roberts. He was doing some Broadway production work and was also working at CBS. When Suspense moved from the west coast, Roberts received the producer assignment for Suspense. He cast his wife in some of the episodes. She may have also appeared in some of his productions of the series Indictment. She tried her hand at writing, and prepared the script based on the Benet story, "Elemental." She used the name "Edna Rae," her first and middle birth names. By the Fall of 1960, CBS began its purge of radio programs, and it was announced that Suspense would end in November 1960 along with its radio soaps and Have Gun Will Travel. She authored a second Suspense script, "Home is Where You Find It," originally planned to air on November 20, 1960, but was changed to November 27, 1960. Perhaps Paul Roberts wanted to have his wife's script be the final broadcast of the legendary series. Suspense, cancelled for at least the fourth time, would return, yet again, seven months later for its final run.

Roberts and McRae divorced in 1961. She married Neil Burstyn in 1964, and changed her name to the one we recognize for so many successful roles on screen, TV, and theater.

I located a version of this, not AFRS Presents but the Screen Guild Theater version.  Don't think it would fit your needs but it is available.

We need this program for a marathon we are recreating on YUSA.

We do have the aircheck of the show. But an engineer played a cart on the air in the middle of the program.

Hi all,

I am looking for a radio show that we had on open reel many years ago.  Unfortunately, it did not get digitized and I can’t find it.

It is (AFRS Presents), and stars Ronald Colman and John Charles Thomas.  It is from Christmas day, December 25, 1944.

I need it ASAP.

Please get in touch with me as soon as you can.

Thank you.

Yes, this was an AFRS Presents. But the one I am looking for according to Goldin was also an AFRS Presents but it featured both John Charles Thomas and Ronald Colman.

I saw the below title, when I was looking and it featured Ken Darby and John Charles Thomas.

Thanks for the help.

I do appreciate the effort.

Eventually, I hope I can find the open reel copy with this program.

Mutual Broadcasting System Newsreel of the Air

Neal Lavon

Does anyone here know if there is any collection or holdings anywhere of the Mutual Broadcasting System's "Newsreel of the Air?" I am specifically looking for a Newsreel of the Air broadcast that would have aired in late May or June of 1953. It has a three-minute segment of a program that I am interested in.

Thanks for any help.
