UPDATED CASEY LOG!

NEED SOME HELP!

Updated Casey log -- not for publication yet -- please do not share outside of Cobalt Club or this OTRR group at this time since it's still being edited, updated, and enhanced.
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/10z9lg9FkZsFE_vaN19DDGh1kTVVCEZwKYa8RjUIBjfA/edit?usp=sharing

The log has been reviewed in comparison to the notes that were in Cole's papers as given to me by the late Dave Siegel. I made many corrections to the episode names and have identified all of the repeats that I could possibly find. Cole usually changed titles for repeats and often changed character names.

I have a newspapers.com subscription and am looking for the help of someone who has access to different services that have access to other newspapers for their listings.

The key area I need help is for the revival series starting at line 384. There are many episodes early in the revival series for which I have not been able to get information. I did have some CBS press release info for about a third of the revival, and verified others with newspaper listings. But there are some weeks that are missing information.

Those notes do not begin until the March 4, 1944 broadcast. Therefore, I could also use some newspaper clippings for dates prior to that if those clippings have plot descriptions in them, even if it's just a single sentence. Again, I've exhausted newspapers.com.

Remember, newspapers.com is owned by Ancestry.com, so going through Ancestry will not be able to add to the info gathered so far. So if you have a genealogybank.com, newspaperarchive.com, or other service, especially through a library, such as New York Times or ProQuest or some other source, that would be greatly appreciated for any of those dates.

Whatever help you can offer would be spectacular! As sister Edna says about projects like these, "Rome wasn't burned in a day!"

My blog about the series (on its way to becoming a book) is at https://bluenotebulletin.blogspot.com/
Enjoy!!

I have been unable to find anything pre-1945 in newspaperarchive.com For Casey. It seems very dark and cold.

I think there may have been a change in the title in 1945.  In searching the NYT I found the first listing for Casey, Press Photographer in a 2/6/44 weekly listing.  I've attached and highlighted the listing as well as the 2/12/44 page for the airing of that show.

Joe/Danny
Go to jjonz.us/RadioLogs and search the NY Times  for "Flashgun Casey" years 1940-44 (also do a search for Casey as the OCR was not too good). You will find that title was first listed on 43-07-04. The title appears to change to Casey, Crime Photographer  on 44-02-06.
Hope this helps

Thanks for reminding me
For some reason the Alonzo Deen Cole papers have the name change noted as April 8, 1944
That makes no sense, because we have a copy of "Clue in the Clouds" with the series name "Casey Press Photographer" from Feb 26 1944
Thanks for making me look again with some common sense!
The date of the change with my spot checks of newspapers as well as yours is the broadcast of Feb 5, 1944

I'll be posting a new link to the log today and also a PDF

I am checking  David Siegel and J Randolph Cox's book on Flashgun Casey.  Here is their take on names:

Program debuted on July 7, 1943 as "Flash-Gun Casey press Photographer"
On April 8, 1944 it became "Casey, Press Photographer"
By July 4, 1945 title was shortened to "Crime Photographer"
March 29, 1947 the title "Casey, Crime Photographer" came into existence and remained the official title until the programs end on November 16, 1950.

When Casey returned to the airwaves in 1954, title reverted back to "Crime Photographer".

Yesterday I mentioned the first NY Times listing was for July 4, 1943. That was a Sunday paper with a weekly schedule. The listing for the show was actually for Wed 7/7/43. I did not mean to mislead. So probaly the first actual play date is as Archie said, Wed July 7, 1943. WABC at 11:30 pm.

However, on the change of title. The following are listings from the  NYT Saturdays at  1130pm, WABC
        Jan 15, 1944 – Flashgun Casey
        Jan 22, 1944 – Flashgun Casey
Jan 29, 1944 – Preempted for President Roosevelt speech, March of Dimes
        Feb 5, 1944 – Casey, Press Photographer
        Feb 12, 1944 – Casey, Press Photographer....

These are earlier dates than Archie found in the published book on Flashgun Casey.

People obviously stayed up later in those days!

Edited

A newly revised version of the Casey log is at
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/10z9lg9FkZsFE_vaN19DDGh1kTVVCEZwKYa8RjUIBjfA/edit?usp=sharing

A correction was made to a couple of entries. The process of hunting down those errors led me to review all of the CBS press releases I have which brought some other curious items to focus, and those have been corrected as well.

As to the title becoming "Casey, Crime Photographer," it never really did. CBS press releases do not reflect that. (It was the late Dave S who sent me all these research materials, so I'm looking at what he had).
The problem is a punctuation issue!
Press releases and other documents have this formatting:
[text starting with something like 'latest adventure of'] Casey, "Crime Photographer"
The releases and other documents never have "Casey, Crime Photographer"
As collectors we designate it with this latter name especially because of the way Tony Marvin announces the show title, but his scripts had the former, not the latter.
It's funny that the comic book uses the latter and not the former! The public knew it as the former, but all of the timetables use "crime photographer"
If you've been following my blog notes, you know that continuity was not a strong point of the series, whether it's Cole or Dietz, or CBS! The one that makes me chuckle the most is when Ann Williams makes cynical comments about "blondes" -- but in the comic book Ann is always pictured as -- blonde!!

This was all tedious work and it felt really really good to be done and have many of those issues settled! Thanks so much for being "fresh eyes" which are so vital to this work.

There may be some other resources that can help with clarification and verification, but those are likely many weeks away from being available with various closures and hours limitations of libraries and other institutions.

I still believe there are many more repeated scripts to be identified. Of the 67 Philip Morris broadcasts, only 30 were new scripts, and that does not include "Thunderbolt" which takes large portions of plot and dialogue of "Gentle Strangler" but not the script in its entirety.

This is a link to the PDF version of the spreadsheet.
https://my.pcloud.com/publink/show?code=XZJibCkZ4CHAmKcSJzXQKsojxPWp2knshnI7
This file should be considered as a "snapshot" of the information as of the morning of April 16, 2020
Always check the online spreadsheet for the latest information.

And remember the blog

THANK you again so very much for your help!
