Radio's Missing Masters

Larry Maupin

Hello to everyone.  I would like to open a subject for discussion and would appreciate advice and comments from all members who have an interest in and knowledge about the subject of this message.  Recently I acquired 18 cassette tapes labeled "Radio's Missing Masters."  The person who sent them said that they were obtained years ago as a boxed set from a dealer.  Do you think it would be a good project for us to place them on the Internet Archive as a set providing that they are not already available to listen to free of charge on the Archive or somewhere else?

I do not have the entire set, but as you will see below there are probably enough episodes to make a good start.

So far I have searched the OTRR Library collection and the "Singles and Doubles" set for series titles and have found some.  What follows is a list of episodes and dates as well as any notations that appear on the labels.  I will include only those which I did not find in the search:

The Judge (2/13/52). Audition.

The Humphrey Bogart Theater (9/17/48). Audition.

Safari (1950s). "First and only existing show."

Once Upon a Midnight (5/11/45). "First and only existing show."

The Private Practice of Dr. Dana (12/21/47). "Earliest of five existing Shows."

Escape (9/18/47).  "One of three from NBC."

Emotion (7/8/49). "Audition and only show."

Mulligan's Travels (6/8/49). Audition.

The Clyde Beatty Show (1940s). "Premier."

Crime Correspondent (10/21/49). "Audition and only show."

Action Eighty (3/26/52). Audition

Operation Danger (6/25/50). Audition

The Green Lama (5/17/49). Audition.

T-Man (4/29/49) Audition.

Half Hour To Kill (10/29/46). Audition.

The Bob Burns Show (11/25/47). Audition.

My Mother's Husband (5/4/50) Audition

Action (1/15/44) Audition.

June's My Girl (10/4/48). Audition.

Three for Adventure 1940s). Audition.

Christopher London (1950s).

The Case of Mr. Ace.  "Premier."

Martin Kane, Private Detective (10/29/53). "Only existing episode."

The Fat Man (1/21/50). "Premiere."

Bunco Squad (4/15/50). "Rehearsal."

Here Comes McBride (5/19/49). "Premiere."

I am going to do something with these.  Here are some options: (1) It costs $40 to have one cassette digitized, so I could have my local business do five at a time and just send them to Ryan and have him provide a link to both groups, since I have given up on trying to share them with everybody by uploading them; (2) I could send them to David and Pete if they would like to distro them to the Purchasing Group; (3) The cost might be less if I buy a dual cassette recorder, make copies of all of the tapes, and mail them to Ryan, David or Pete.  That might actually be the most fun, and would not take as long as having five digitized every couple of months until all of them are done.  The disadvantage would be that the recipient of the cassettes I dub would still need to have them digitized.

If anyone replies to this message with an opinion about whether this project is worth undertaking by one of our groups, information about how many of these episodes have already been digitized and are available to all OTR enthusiasts to listen to free of charge, and advice about how best to make the rest of them on my list (if there are any left) available to all, I will be grateful and will take every comment into careful consideration and reply respectfully if a reply seems appropriate.

This could lead to another graduating class for the Internet Archive, but it will take some time and I hope to have a lot of fun along the way, and perhaps we can accomplish something of substance to further the groups's mission.

Larry.

I have a cassette deck that I purchased for these kinds of things
I am a little backed up now, but if you contact me offline (outside of this forum) I can send you my address and I can do the transfers of the ones that are not already circulating, and then evaluate the others for transfer if they are upgrades in some way

Yes, be careful, with these.  Be very sure you only digitize what is truly not available.  I’d have to check but most if not all have been available for years.

So going to all of that trouble is not really worth the effort.

Thank you Barbara.  The otrcat link doesn't work, but if people want to pay a dealer for them that is all right.  I have not found them for sale anywhere, including Radio Spirits, which I thought might have been the source of the cassettes I received from another collector.  If anyone in the group wants to purchase them and upload them to the Internet Archive as a set, that would might be a good and inexpensive solution that would allow thousands of other OTR enthusiasts to enjoy them free of charge.

Thank you Larry.  If anyone wants to upload a set to the Internet Archive (and I am assuming that they are not already there) that would be great.  Your message gives me the idea that I would only need to digitize any that I have which are not uploaded by another member.

Thank you Joe.  The Pyle model looks good and is not too expensive.  I had an old AIWA model that worked wonderfully well that I bought about thirteen years ago at Walmart.  I dubbed dozens of OTR soap opera episodes that I acquired on cassettes by borrowing them from the SPERDVAC Library, and they still sound good to this day. The AIWA finally stopped working.  If I buy another recorder I just need to make sure it is easy to use.  When I see an instruction manual my heart sinks.  But that may be the best option available if no other member uploads some or all of the 60 episodes to the Internet Archive.

Yours is the last message I see that I haven't replied to, and I want to thank everybody for all the great ideas and for being interested in the project.  When all ideas have been fully aired and every member who wishes to has had a chance to comment on the subject, I expect that we will reach a resolution and act upon it.

Best regards,

Larry

Larry.

Larry,
I have a Radio Spirits cassette set Radio's Missing Masters, which contains 20 tapes.  If you need them, I can digitize the missing 2 tapes from your set.  I have a cheapo cassette digitizer which seems to work fairly well.  Let me know.

Larry Maupin

Hello Peter.  I think you can provide a solution to this entire matter if you are willing.  If the original set contained 20 cassettes and 40 episodes, which makes sense because each of the 18 cassettes I have features two 30-minute episodes, you probably have all 40 shows.  What do you think about digitizing them yourself?  If you do, you can then upload them to the Internet Archive as a complete set if you know how to do that, and if you don't know how you can send them to Ryan Ellett who has already demonstrated an expertise in uploading sets to the Archive by doing so with two different ones recently.  You probably already know that his email address is oldradiotimes@....  Perhaps you could correspond with him before digitizing the cassettes to make sure you both agree that that will be the best way to proceed.

That would leave me with nothing to do except write episode summaries of all of them and post a review after the set is uploaded, but I can live with that and will be happy to do so.

If this is not something you wish to undertake, I am going to read every message that members send in today and tomorrow and see if you or anyone else such as Gary has volunteered to digitize all the episodes and upload them or send them to Ryan.  If no one has done so by Saturday, then I will proceed after consulting with Ryan and David Oxford as to what seems to be the best course to take.

Thank you Bill.  Every time I click on a link to otrcat I get the same message: "Sorry, OTRCAT.com is currently unavailable."  This has been the case for months.  If you or anyone else can get a link that works perhaps you would like to purchase the set there and make it available to all members of our group, which could lead to the shows being placed on the Internet Archive.  I am concerned, however, that the owner may have retired or even died.

I am grateful for your reply.

Larry, $40 to digitize one cassette is outrageous. Many if not all of these shows are in many collectors' hands if they wanted them. You could buy CDs or digital copies from any number of dealers and get them in wav, flac or high encodes of mp3s. If top quality isn't important to you and just want the enjoyment of listening to them then, for $5.00, you could buy them from here:

The link for the Missing Masters set is https://www.otrcat.com/p/missing-masters
This collection includes radio show ideas were only made into audition shows or pilots and never made it to the airwaves. Some old time radio shows never make it to the radio waves. This collection includes episodes of popular shows that were never aired as well as unsuccessful pilot shows that were never made again.

I don't know why Larry can't access this site. It was there yesterday and is still there this morning.

There is an instant download option for the shows. But I would like to know what shows you think are not already in the OTRR Library's Singles and Doubles set or if the audition was picked up, part of the series posted? I don't see any.

In the past, it has been policy to not upload or share anything by Radio Spirits, as they can be very active about protecting their recordings. They've spent a lot of time collecting and cleaning up the episodes. Not sure if this has changed or not, but I'd be careful.

Larry.

Hi Lynn,

You may be right about that.  I have the latest catalog and see that the company is still charging a lot of money for its collections, but perhaps people are willing to pay for them because they come in such pretty boxes.  I do not see "Radio's Missing Masters" either in the printed catalog or online.  If the issue you raise about copywrite is considered to be a serious potential liability by our group owners, perhaps they will decide that we will be restricted to sharing them among ourselves instead of uploading them.

I guess David and Ryan will have the last word on that, and thank you for raising such an important point.

In the past, it has been policy to not upload or share anything by Radio Spirits, as they can be very active about protecting their recordings. They've spent a lot of time collecting and cleaning up the episodes. Not sure if this has changed or not, but I'd be careful.

Barbara, of the 26 episodes I listed in yesterday's email I did not see a single one in the Singles & Doubles set.  I searched for them by series title and found none.  I do think you must have a point to make with this.  Are you suggesting that since you have been able to locate all of them in the S&D collection, which means that they have already been digitized, that you can gather them together as a set and then we can upload them to the Archive?  I have now asked about four different members if they would like to do that, and so far nobody has replied in the affirmative.  If you want to do it, I think everyone will applaud your effort.

If no one has announced plans by Saturday to (a) make all the episodes available to the group to enjoy among ourselves or (b) upload them as a set to the Archive, I will proceed with the project as best I can.  That will involve writing episode summaries on the ones I have, and after that determining what Ryan or David wants to do with the shows.  It will take more than a month just to write the summaries, so the wheels will turn slowly on this unless someone can provide a link to most or all of the programs before the summaries are completed.

You misunderstood me. I said I could not find any that were NOT in the S & D set. I think they are all there. Name one you could not find.

Hi Barbara.  The link still doesn't work for me, but I looked through the Singles and Doubles set and did not find a title for any of the episodes that I listed in my email to the groups yesterday.  So you and I are in agreement on this point: I don't see any either.

I don't know if these are already on the Internet Archive as a set or even individually.  Searching for material on its website seems very difficult.

The link for the Missing Masters set is https://www.otrcat.com/p/missing-masters
This collection includes radio show ideas were only made into audition shows or pilots and never made it to the airwaves. Some old time radio shows never make it to the radio waves. This collection includes episodes of popular shows that were never aired as well as unsuccessful pilot shows that were never made again.
www.otrcat.com
I don't know why Larry can't access this site. It was there yesterday and is still there this morning.

There is an instant download option for the shows. But I would like to know what shows you think are not already in the OTRR Library's Singles and Doubles set or if the audition was picked up, part of the series posted? I don't see any.

Larry

I remember when OTR Spirits threatened to close down the group with a law
suit for sharing a show online. I can't remember what year that was but I
know it caused a panic with the group.
Personally I think that is not fair but I am just a OTR Fan I know I
bought some things from them and I didn't think much of how they handled
the OTR shows because they took the ads off the shows, To me that was
part of the fun of listening to the shows because it shows how and what
people used things for.

Larry,

Depending on what is decided about making these available (IA or just withing the group), I can digitize all or just the two missing cassettes.  If it's all, it will take me a while.  I'm not familiar with IA's process, so If somebody else can put them up (if so decided), I would appreciate it.
