Actor identification - Lone Ranger and Jack Benny
Two questions came in on the YouTube channel. First, a listener of the 8/14/1939 episode of The Lone Ranger titled "Pot Luck Potter's Mule" thinks Tonto does not sound like John Todd. According to the series log, Todd played the role for the entire series - but I'm guessing that doesn't necessarily mean he wasn't out occasionally because of illness, etc., and they had to bring in a substitute. Anyone able to tell for certain? Episode link is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mu9L7f7DzcY&lc=UgygwqZgV8za4TZrZMR4AaABAg
Second is the 4/24/1938 The Jell-O Program Starring Jack Benny episode called "Snow White and the Seven Gangsters." The listener is wondering who played Grumpy. That link is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yzpj8m7-b8Y&lc=Ugx5oU9Rn_1UF5BeTVl4AaABAg. According to this source, the cast for that episode is Jack Benny, Don Wilson, Phil Harris and His Orchestra, Mary Livingstone, Kenny Baker, Andy Devine, Sam Hearn, Wally Baker, Harry Baldwin, Ed Beloin (writer, performer: doubles), Bill Morrow (writer), Blanche Stewart. Thanks! |

Michael Moore
I think the actor who played Tonto in this episode was Frank Russel.

As a follow-up to this, for the Jack Benny episode, Don Yowp from the International Jack Benny Fan Club thought the actor playing Grumpy was Wally Baker. Here is Martin Grams' response to the Lone Ranger comment: "Correct. John Todd was on tour performing on stage (if my memory serves me correct, in Cincinnati) for a couple weeks. Someone else filled in for him during those two weeks but I cannot recall who did. We may not have gone through those scripts that were marked with cast yet." This info will probably be in hist next volume on the series.
