Free Cloud Storage Services -- an overview

John Nicholson

When I was looking for where to store the REPS library so we can share files with members, someone suggested OpenDrive. It looked like a great deal at $9.95 per month for unlimited storage. That's a pretty good price if you have many large files to store. When I tried to share it with others, it was not allowed. If you want to share, you have to pay an additional $5.00 for each person. So if I want to share files with 100 people, it will cost $500 per month. A little expensive, isn't it? Instead, I went with pCloud where I already have 10TB of storage. I find it easy to use, and the UI is much better than OpenDrive.

One thing that might be good to go over is about security, where everything is hosted (are they self reliant or are they not), do the have a "zero knowledge" policy etc.  What policies do that have to what is stored on their servers etc (while most people think it's illegal concerns, that actually isn't always the case, remember their servers, their rules and if they host internationally, they have a lot of rules to follow as well)?

The cloud companies are wise to this and now have wording that if they find this going on, they can cut off all of the accounts.

I have not heard of anyone to whom this has happened. I have some multiple account situations because one is personal, one is OTR, but it's just as easy to have multiple free accounts but one each with a different service so you never have to worry if they crack down.

I note that you can usually create as many free accounts as you have email addresses.

Thanks Gordon -- I mentioned the MS Office subscription aspect, but you have a better explanation than I provided. I'll fix the page!

Thanks for the review of these Joe. On thing I should add to your onedrive review is that if you have a family plan $100/yr instead of $70/yr for a personal plan, it comes with six Office 365 accounts (which each include 1TB of storage)and you can use it on tablets and phones in addition to these. Each account can be used by you under a different name if you like so you can in effect, get 6TB of storage for that $100/yr. As you say, it's a great backup solution and if you do this, it's the cheapest bulk storage out there as far as I have seen.
