OTRR Library Update
Paul Kornman
OTRR Library Update - For the time being, the OTRR Library will be mostly a "listening" library rather than a "lending" library. Due to price increases from our current host, we cannot currently afford the fees for downloading files. You can still listen to any episode in the Library, you just cannot currently download it.
Exception: If the file is part of one of our maintained sets hosted at archive.org, it can still be downloaded. Addition: I've added buttons to Skip ahead 30 seconds or back 15 seconds to the customized player I have built to address this issue. (From my quick testing, everything seems to be working properly - please let me know if you find something amiss.) One possible solution is to move all the Library files to archive.org, but that's a big and slow process. - Paul Kornman |

Gee, that seems like short notice. I never did finish downloading all of those Lone Ranger fills. Ah well. Possibly a solution would be a Patron account? At a nominal fee of... say two or three dollars a month, people have access to download from the site. Not sure how that would work, mind you, but it's an idea. If you got 100 Patrons...

I'll let Paul clarify, but I belief Certified/Maintained sets (which include the Lone Ranger and, actually, many of the most popular series) are all housed on Archive.org now and our library just directs you to Archive when those episodes are accessed. So I don't think we're actually hosting or covering the broadband when those particular series are used by listeners. If you are looking for a place to store, share, up and download from, i suggest you look into sync.com. I have used them before and they are very inexpensive.

Has the OTRR consider buying a 10 tb space on P cloud?
Take care,

IpCloud has a limit of 2TB traffic per month which seems like a lot, but I've bumped against it periodically when sharing distros to the group. You can purchase greater amounts; 10 TB/month as an example would be $500 a year. Not sure what our bandwidth needs are. pCloud can be pretty slow at times, too. I didn't realize that The Lone Ranger was a Certified/Maintained set. That's good to know. Now I can fill out the holes in that particular collection.

If you know what episodes you need, I may be able to help you. This goes for anyone else looking for shows during the dry spell. I have lots of WAV and FLAC files.

A) I apologize for the short notice. I was unaware that we would be paying a high (to our budget, unaffordable) download fee each month until I received the bill on Tuesday. My first action was to stem the flow (and the expense). If someone has a practical solution, I'm all ears. |

Hey Paul, could you post snapshots of how much storage and bandwidth we’re using at the website host? I’ll take a look at alternative web hosting options. And… how much is the current site billing us monthly? Bob

Hi Paul,
Who is the company we are using? Take care,

The storage is around 1.6 TB. I'm not sure how to see the bandwidth. The billing (from Amazon Web Services) is based on a variety of factors and is currently way too high based on the transfer fees. One of our members has shown me (as of yesterday) how to use pCloud to accomplish our goals and I'm strongly considering moving the Library there. We would get 2TB of storage and 2TB of bandwidth/monthly (if I understand that properly) for a lifetime cost of $400. When I was doing my earlier research, I did not see the ability to generate static URLs for each file, so I went with the first option that would fit our needs - not understanding the toll that our data transfer would amount to. If pCloud does not meet our needs, the backup plan is Internet Archive, but the transfer process is cumbersome and slow, so I'm not enthusiastic about that choice.

Pcloud seems like an awesome solution. I’ve never been overly enthusiastic about the Archive interface.

That pCloud is interesting, so a one time £400 gets you 2tb storage and 2tb bandwidth/month. Extra bandwidth only costs an extra £100/year for an extra 2tb/month. That is cheap in comparison to a lot of other vendors. I have always hated the way Amazon prices for its S3 storage options, if i remember correctly it doesnt cost hardly anything to upload it, just a fortune to access it afterwards.

Having experienced AWS at work, that’s their whole business model for all their services: super easy and inexpensive to start something (whether it be a server, datastore, website, database … whatever), then it’s expensive to use it. And the more you use it the more expensive it gets, no “volume discount”. But by then, your customer is addicted. I’m sure it’s a well thought out model for making money for Amazon but as IT Infrastructure management I found it, well, parasitical.

I was trying to review some files for the group, and it appears that I can no longer use the player on the library website. I know others have mentioned this as well, but I wanted to echo that it is not an isolated issue.
