DAVID HARDING, COUNTERSPY
Larry Maupin
THE REPS LIBRARY CONTAINS ONLY FIVE EPISODES WITH THIS SERIES TITLE. I DO NOT THINK THEY ARE AVAILABLE ANYWHERE ELSE. THE BEST PART ABOUTTHEM IS THAT EACH FEATURES A DOCTOR OR A PROFESSOR WHO IS ALSO A HOMICIDAL MANIAC. THIS PROGRAM BEGINS WITH "TONIGHT THE CASE OF THE COLD-BLOODED PROFESSOR, PART 1.. BROUGHT TO YOU EACH TUESDAY AND THURSDAY BY PEPSI-COLA. THE SETTING IS LIPTON, ILLINOIS, ON A COUNTRY ROAD HARDING STOPS TO SPEAK TO A FARMER. HE ASKS HIM IF A PROFESSOR HOWARD WORKS AT A COLLEGE IN LIPTON. THE FARMER REPLIES, "YES, HE'S A GENIUS WHO WRITES ARTICLES FOR A SCIENTIFIC JOURNAL. THE FARMER GRATUITOUSLY TELLS HIM THAT PROFESSOR HOWARD HAS A GOOD HOUSEKEEPED, BUT SHE IS HOMELY."
HARDING ARRIVES AT THE PROFESSOR'S HOME AND IS ADMITTED. RECENTLY THE AMBERVILLE BANK WAS ROBBED OF MORE THAN $100,000. THEN HARDING TELLS HOWARD THAT THE CAR THE CULPRIT WAS DRIVING WENT THROUGH A PUDDLE OF OIL,AND HAS BEEN IDENTIFIED AS HIS. HARDING THEN ARRESTS HIM ON A CHARGE OF BANK ROBBERY. WHEN HOWARD RAISES HIS HANDS, IT TRIGGERS A GUNSHOT, AND HARDING FALLS DOWN WOUNDED. THEN THE PROFESSOR TELLS HIS ASSISTANT "WE'RE LEAVING, PACK THE BAGS." THEY TAKE HARDING, PRESUMED DEAD, IN THE CAR WITH THEM, AND HOWARD POISONS HIS ASSISTANT WITH A CANDY BAR BECAUSE HE KNOWS WHAT HOWARD REALLY LOOKS LIKE WITHOUT A DISGUISE. SOME TIME LATER HARDING MIRACULOUSLY SHOWS UP AT HOWARD'S EMPTY HOUSE TO INVESTIGATE. HARDING THEN VISITS A LOCAL DOCTOR AND LEARNS THAT HOWARD HAS A SEVERE CASE OF PEPTIC ULCERS CAUSED BY A VERY HIGH-STRUNG NERVOUS CONDITION. HOWARD TAKES BISMUTH POWDERS FOR HIS ULCERS. THEN HOWARD ROBS A LOCAL BANK OF $130,000. HOWARD THEN TAKES PICTURES OF EVERYONE IN THE BANK, INCLUDING TWO UNSUSPECTING POLICE OFFICERS. THE HOME OFFICE IN WASHINGTON THEN INFORMS HARDING THAT A DRUGGIST EXPECTS HOWARD TO ARRIVE IN LESS THAN TWO HOURS TO PICK UP HIS BISMUTH POWDER. HARDING THEN BOARDS A PLANE, HOPING TO BE AT THE DRUGSTORE BEFORE HOWARD ARRIVES. A GIRL FROM THE BANK NAMED GILDA LEAVES WITH HOWARD AND MOVES IN WITH HIM. THE EPISODE CONCLUDES WITH THE ANNOUNCER STATING THAT NEXT WEEK PART 2 OF 'THE COLD=BLOODED PROFESSOR' WILL BE PRESENTED. THEN 'PEPSI-COLA PRESENTS COUNTERSPY. . . . -- Larry Maupin |

Radio Spirits just released a set with 16 episodes. 74 are available in the OTRR library. Not sure if there is overlap with any of these and the REPS offerings.

What I find so amusing is that I ran these shows from discs when I was in college almost 50 years ago!
I had no money, so Stu Weiss helped me get them at the first FOTR convention in 1976. $5 a disc!! I wish I had kept the one that Don McLaughlin signed for me. I did not keep the master tapes I made, but I have been running into nice copies that I traded with some of the pioneer collectors of the time I wish I had kept the tapes, which gets filed under the rapidly expanding file "if only I knew then...." -- ---------- Suspense resource page https://sites.google.com/view/suspense-collectors-companion Suspense enhanced log https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/11XflGB-S18jQ8JPr4EV1C9aZsRM_3Dw4xlLpGqgpBiU/edit?usp=sharing The Whistler complete log, presentations, and more https://sites.google.com/view/the-whistler-files The Big Story Revealed! https://sites.google.com/view/thestoriesbehindthebigstory/ Casey, Crime Photographer episode analysis https://bluenotebulletin.blogspot.com/ |

Well, I didn’t say what we had was right, just that it matched something, so it wasn’t totally made up. This was an ABC series (at that point), not syndicated, so there should be a definitive broadcast date. And scripts are usually the best evidence. Thus, you have to wonder where Goldin (and Neyhart also) got those dates. I suppose we should ask them. But, if these episodes really do belong in the spring, and not the fall, then 6 of them are part of a string of 16 chained together by trailer promo’s announcing the next episode. In which case, all 16 belong in the spring, not the fall. Did you, perhaps, research that also?

I ordered the Radio Sprits set, just to see. And, actually, we have those 7 episodes, we just disagree with the dates. Our dates agree with Goldin.

I have 144 Counterspy shows in my library. I know some are prob dupes. I have one called Diamond Thieves #674 from Dec 21, 1953. I will see about cleaning them up and share what I find in the next few days.

When you did this research, did you find any evidence to date or provide official titles to the “Maisie the Barfly” and “Flanagan Sisters Corn Syrup” episodes? I’ve always thought it odd that they are “homeless”.
