The comic industry is in decline because they are in denial about the fact that their customer-base is 50+ years old and they are not ever going to sell the 30- population. I’m pretty sure that I pay the rent for the Chicago store where I get mine. It will be sad when it all dies but, for the moment, the industry does seem to have survived COVID-19. My monthly bill is nosing back up close to the $700 it was before The Pandemic. Hopefully it lasts long enough to run my collection up to 100,000 books. Maybe 7 years to get to that which will make it a 61-62 year run. But I am so tired of new-and-improved. Old-and-like-it-used-to-be is much better. Marvel and DC would sell more if they would just figure that out, which is seems like maybe they are starting to get it. btw … 85,000 comics are a lot harder to store than 85,000 OTR .mp3 files. J Having experience with both, I’m sure!

Old comics are a good one to have.

While the new comic industry is collapsing due to certain current day things that are going on, about the only businesses that are still doing well that are comic related are the older stuff, not just silver and bronze age ( have one Lone Ranger movie tie in from the Bronze Age), but all the way up to about the mid 90s.

Serials I started getting back into.  Really liking Trader Tom of the China Seas.

Not really about the age of the customer base.

There are other reasons, I don't want to get into too much detail as we get bombarded with this stuff a lot nowadays anyway that are affecting our entertainment (not just comics, but all forms of entertainment).  I think it's not good to not have some discussions about it as it very much affects preserving cultural history and where entertainment culture is going, but I can understand why not wanting to mention it, but I do think that it is a problem that our efforts are going to be dealing with.

Just my fear with it in that regard, but I digress.

This thread caught my interest.  I use DC++ and am a member of 4 different hubs, which I'm usually on 24/7.  My present "share size" is rather small, a wee bit more than 31TB.  Thousands of OTR, OTV, OTM shows, and of course music, especially Music compilations.  Do miss the OTRR hub, but I think that went dark when Jim passed. . .

Some of the share is also ham radio related, but only a small part of it.

I am an avid collector of old TV shows and cartoons from many years. I would love to be able to exchange and share with anybody else who appreciates them for the nostalgic sake.

Please feel free to contact me.  If anyone here is familiar with AirDC I am a long time sharer there too.  All of my files are available as well.  I can offer an invite to any interested parties to join.

I've saved quite a bit of money over those years, that's for sure.

Does anyone have any of the old cartoons they can share? My daughter loves those and she ordered and paid for some to watch on one of the sites you can get on the new TV's and they canceled the order because they were too white is the only thing I can think of now. I mean our country is going to Heck in a hat and a handbag as my mom used to say only she didn't use the word Heck. They don't want people to watch anything that is really entertaining and not full of the S word. I saw it coming and started collecting OTR in the 90's. Cost me a pretty penny but at least I had things that were suitable for my children who were a lot younger then.

Hi Jackie,

I have over 4,300 cartoons (449GB), old and newer, movie and TV available for direct download on any of the 4 hubs I am logged into, usually 24/7.  The (private) hubs I use are Oldtymeradioman, OTR Hub, PhilsPlace, and DooDrop Inn.  All you need is to have the DC++ (or airDC etc) software on your computer and of course hub membership to whichever hubs you're interested in.

Agreeing with those points isn't also exclusive to that demographic either.

Unfortunately, where we are at in 2021, it's getting harder and harder to find something devoid of politics that can bring people together, regardless of where they may be in other aspects of culture/politics etc.

Thanks Evan, you are exactly right--my post probably offended many also. I guess I illustrated my own point, political posts have no place in this friendly and accepting place. I humbly apologize.

Well, I can't speak for everyone, your post didn't offend me.  You spoke your mind, I respect that.  I'm one of those weird people that like exchanges like this as that's honestly how I learn by having my opinions challenged.  I try to keep an open mind that way, I don't like "echo chambers".

The concern that I have here and now, that as a group that is seeking to preserve a piece of our cultural history, is also going to be under attack.  I have seen that in other preservation or other pop culture sub cultures and it's not being ruined by fans of those sub cultures but by those that actively despising those subcultures, the fact that they just move on after they have accomplished their goals is a testament to that.  I have seen it within gaming and I have seen it with comic books.  I worry about what Conde Nast is going to do with The Shadow (I am not without examples, Captain America, Superman, Lone Ranger, their legacy, history has been challenged).  Create new characters, new stories that feature the new paradigm, if that is truly the goal, unfortunately, when the goal is more browbeating a viewpoint, they need that built in audience for those other characters, because the new characters won't be able to stand on their own as far as popularity goes.  Then those older loved characters are destroyed, the stories that they tell, are ruined for future generations.

The people that are doing this, don't love these subcultures, they don't care about these subcultures.

I would imagine that we all (from different walks of life, different political parties, races etc) came here with a love for a form of entertainment from a particular point in our history.  I would imagine that we have enough context and nuance to be able to enjoy these programs and be able to learn from them and not repeat what may or may not be relevant in today's world, without destroying the ability for future generations to still enjoy them and learn from them as well.  It should always be there for the next generation to learn from, because I can promise you, there will always need to be a reminder.

At least to me anyway and that's why I don't think we can actually be in a vacuum with regard to the politics of the day.  I would imagine that it is something that all preservation efforts are going to have to navigate in today's political climate, like it or not.

I got to thinking about it, I think I need to be more specific when I'm talking about navigating political waters.  The political waters that I'm talking about just focused on what preservation would have to deal with.  To give an example of a political topic that is also talked about fairly frequently, copyright law.  In my mind, in modern day politics, not only would it be swapping out commercials (like in the article and rather or not having ads in the stories or not is also a conversation we already have with regard to OTR), but maybe real/perceived problematic story lines and/or characters.  That's the kind of thing (in my mind), it goes against preservation.

While I don't think we need/should be in a vacuum with what's going on politically (or expand it as the need arises), we still need to focus in on what is going on that does affect our preservation efforts directly only.  It's hard, but I think as this group is a preservation group it is something that needs to not be so far back in the mind, but a little bit more forward.

That's just my take on it though, take that for what it's worth.

I am relatively new to this forum even though I am familiar with otrr and Jim Beshires.

Keeping politics out is easy. History is history warts and all, and I accept that. Other people do not and that is their right as well. I may not agree, but like I said that is their right and I keep moving forward.

Jackie's comment was "not" appropriate because she is now tagging people and erecting walls which I find offensive.

I am in several otr groups where there is no hint of politics, just good fun.

This group may not be for me.

Hello Phil, good to see you are still out there. I remember your daily updates on another site (now gone) years ago and enjoyed reading them after work.

Tom

Well put!  Years ago, a well-known member of the group assumed that I'm a Liberal b/c live on CT, and began sending me articles from his point of view. I thought that we joined this groups to share what we love?

Cheers,

Keeping politics out is easy. History is history warts and all, and I accept that. Other people do not and that is their right as well. I may not agree, but like I said that is their right and I keep moving forward.

Jackie's comment was "not" appropriate because she is now tagging people and erecting walls which I find offensive.

I am in several otr groups where there is no hint of politics, just good fun.

This group may not be for me.

Hello Phil, good to see you are still out there. I remember your daily updates on another site (now gone) years ago and enjoyed reading them after work.

The banned cartoons were labeled as such because of the content.  At the time of WW2 bashing the enemy in this case the Axis was de Rieger.  All the PC crap was not even a twinkle in someone's brain yet.  It had anti-Japanese, German, and black hootenanny style depictions.   If you want an an example, check out Bugs Bunny Nips the Nips.  Wartime anti Japanese cartoon.  There is also this one, https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=2ahUKEwiLlZqvlpfwAhWuHzQIHaojDQ8QFjAAegQIBRAD&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DUacUR7bPnMM&usg=AOvVaw0scJjyvziGsRXORF903cc9

black depiction.   Comedy back in the day but now with the BLM mess going on, would be pretty politically charged, etc. etc.
