Good Old Days of Radio podcast: Dead Ernest

Joe Webb

"Dead Ernest" is featured on the Good Old Days of Radio podcast. The episode almost never aired! Bill Spier put it in the "rejected" pile. Kay Thompson read it and told him he was wrong. The title was changed. The main character was renamed. The show was cast with radio pros in the summer because Hollywood stars were not always easy to get in summer time because of production scheduling and vacations. And it was a good time to schedule scripts you were not totally confident in. This is the script that won Suspense a Peabody Award. And that award embarassed Roma Wines into rescinding their decision to cancel their sponsorship and re-up for another 26 weeks. It is a beloved broadcast that puts you on a roller coaster of drama, terror, and in the end, a brief scene of a little comedic relief.
