Joe Hehn Tuesday (December 15, 2020)
Welcome back to "Joe Hehn Tuesday!" Mr. Hehn (1931-2020) was a pioneering collector of radio recordings when the hobby emerged in the 1960s. Digitizing his collection of reel tapes and discs has been the effort of a wide range of North American volunteers, and includes assistance of some international collectors. The principal groups supporting this effort with their funds, time, technology and skills are the Old Time Radio Researchers and a small group of transcription disc preservationists who refer to themselves as the "The Knights of the Turning Table." New material is being added very week to the Joe Hehn Collection on archive.org. We'll try to highlight some of that material on this Facebook page. Tonight, enjoy something unusual: an episode of The Adventures of Billy Swift, Boy Detective, or feast on an hourlong Fifth War Loan Drive from June 12, 1944. Maybe you’ll want to settle in for some high adventure with the first two episodes of Voyage of the Scarlet Queen. (You should be able to click on the titles). Whatever your preference, enjoy!

We think it may be an uncirculating series and episode. Or at least an episode that fell out of OTR circulation a long time ago. A few have popped up in this collection like that. Jim Cox's book "Radio Crime Fighters" has a brief entry on "Billy Swift." Cox dates the series to 1938 and says that it was syndicated by World Broadcasting for Sunkist. Cox notes that there are two episodes circulating, but he doesn't identify them or cite a source for them. The only other reference I could find to the series confirmed the 1938 date, said that 52 episodes were produced, and that the series was running on eighteen stations in the United States and Canada. I noticed in the entry for 'Mr and Mrs North"' that whoever wrote the introduction said: "Most old time radio fans of today do not consider the series as highly as its original audiences did". I don't know who these 'fans' are, but I for one love this show, the television series and the books. I personally think that we should avoid these type of criticisms, however mild, letting the listener judge for themselves. One person's gold may be another person's trash.
That's just my opinion. Scott

Thanks so much for you comment! I have edited the page to better reflect the intended meaning.
Editorial comments on the pages are greatly appreciated. It's all a work in progress. If anyone is has any specific knowledge in any of the series posted, your suggestions would be greatly appreciated Just transferred the Nightwalk series of MMNorth episodes, and unfortunately the concluding part was not there. But the recordings will be cleaned up to be better sound than what is typically circulating. Not sure when they will be added to the page, but they're in the queue. -- ---------- Suspense resource page https://sites.google.com/view/suspense-collectors-companion Suspense enhanced log https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/11XflGB-S18jQ8JPr4EV1C9aZsRM_3Dw4xlLpGqgpBiU/edit?usp=sharing The Whistler Files https://sites.google.com/view/the-whistler-files The Big Story Revealed! https://sites.google.com/view/thestoriesbehindthebigstory/ Casey, Crime Photographer episode analysis https://bluenotebulletin.blogspot.com/

Thanks for the North's discussion! You inspired me to check the plot summaries at Goldindex for newspaper related characters, my particular OTR fetish... And found one, a Winchell like character in the Heavenly Body episode...
Adding it to jheroes.com using the otrr collection at the internet archive for an MP3 player. Incidentally, the file name for that episode is preceded by the letters "TCOT" ... Any idea why? Perhaps I shouldn't mention it, since if the file name is edited to look like all the others, my blog link won't work anymore. ;-) Meanwhile, if the Norths had any other encounters with editors or reporters, feel free to point them out!
