Lawrence William Hammond; Sue Taylor White

For a project about the Voice of America I am working on, I am seeking information on Lawrence William Hammond, who is identified as a writer and director (according to the news article I was using, he was "good looking," too. I have since found out Hammond wrote scripts ffor Mary Noble, Back Stage Wife. Other than that, I cannot find out much about him.
He was married for a time to Susan Grover Whitlock (nee Taylor), a radio writer of soap operas, then scripts for the Cavalcade of America and a New World A' Comin. Taylor went to Mexico to divorce Hammond to marry Paul W White, who became the first head of CBS News. Hammond went to court to get a divorce decree to supplant the Mexican one. Sounded like a juicy tale in the great days of radio. At any rate, I have a good deal of information on Susan Taylor White who ended up working for the Voice of America almost until she died in 1980. Anything further on her would be great and any information on Lawrence William Hammond would be greatly appreciated. Thank you and I look forward to participating in the group. -- Neal Lavon |

Have you done searches at worldradiohistory.com? Their archives are always expanding and they have made many improvements in their searching. They have a lot of trade magazines and books that are not found in online archives.

Thanks for the suggestion, I should have thought of it myself! I did find a reference to a Larry Hammond in a Broadcasting Magazine issue dated June 21, 1943, in which he was referred to as the Radio Head of the WW II era War Manpower Commission. He and Ralph Edwards of Truth or Consequences were teamed up on a cross country trip of TOC broadcasts exchanging tickets for War Bonds. While on the trip, Hammond encouraged women to take jobs in the war effort through these radio performances. That has to be the same guy.
