Radio Archives

Radio Archives is selling its complete collection of RAW files by subscription. These are the files that are first generation copies of their source material after cleaning but before restoration. They can be downloaded in WAV, FLAC, and mp3 formats. I’m afraid to show the price. |

It’s a five year project with 36,000 raw transfers from disc. $60 per month for 600 shows per month.

The prices goes to $120 a month after 31 March 2023.

Yes, definitely in one’s best interest to subscribe before March 31st. That’s a substantial discount for the duration of the project.

I heard on an interview back in February that RA was aiming for 100 subscriptions for their new project to go forward. At the time they said they had about one-third of that number. Has Tom indicated since then if they're getting substantially closer to their goal?

Well, I signed up back in January. So, I’m not helping any to move the needle. The deal is, the $120/month rate is only good until the end of this month. I don’t imagine they’ll get many more subscribers after that when it costs twice as much. Although, they can always have another offer. Still, I’m worried about it. Hope it happens.

So, does someone need to pay the $120 per month? If so, I can help with it. On Thu, Mar 9, 2023 at 3:52 PM Scott Mahan <scott@...> wrote:

It’s $120 per month after March 31. It’s $60 per month if you sign up before March 31

Okay, I could do that. It's just once a month? Can I do this for the group? On Thu, Mar 9, 2023 at 4:42 PM adam <adam@...> wrote:

Apparently they don’t want buyers groups.

Yeah, I said it wrong. 60/120, not 120/240. But, I did sign up. It’s a five-year deal and you get 36,000 files. If it happens. 10¢ apiece. I figured I could do that.

Be careful about that. When signing up, you are agreeing not to distribute or share the programs. Of course, there will be individuals quietly going in together to subscribe, but I expect the open sharing of the monthly distributions would quickly get that person removed from the plan. But this is not from any inside information; I'm not connected in any way to RA. A member of OTRR asked about some sort of subscription for the group but I don't think it got much of a response; it's not really in RA's best interest to have a group like this subscribing and then sharing to dozens or hundreds of people. www.RyanEllett.com The Old Time Radio Researchers "Saving the Past for the Future"

So, if you can't share with the group, what good would a subscription be then? Sure, I get the idea of collecting for the sake of collecting, but I thought that sharing for the sake of preservation is the idea that is practiced here. Will there ever be a point here RA might allow sharing with the group?

Yesterday’s email makes it sound like they’re going forward, regardless of how many subscribers they have. Specifically, the line “We will send the files to you on Saturday”, which was not prefaced with any sort of if we really do this comment.

From what I understand the 600 are going out on Saturday regardless but if the goal of 100 is not met, the entire project is put on pause. Here’s what was said in the newsletter that went out to the Radio Archives mailing list on March 24th:
To make the program work financially, we need 100 subscribers. So far, we don't have enough people on board. If we don't reach our goal by March 31st, we'll have to pause the distribution of the second batch of files until we get enough subscribers.

As someone who hadn't signed up, I got a bit of a different email that offered a trial option: P.S. Don’t want to subscribe for 5 years before you see what the first group of 600 files look like. Subscribe for 1 month only. This offer will be offered only once, in this email. To take advantage of this special offer, Reply to this email and say "I want the one month subscription". We will send the files to you on Saturday and a $60 one time PayPal Request for Payment. Important: As part of the 1 month subscription, you can convert to a regular subscription anytime during April, for the Early Bird price of $60 per month. Well, that is what I thought was encouraging about yesterday’s email. He didn’t repeat the threat. Maybe I’m reading something into it that’s not there. We’ll see.

Overnight, I got an email from PayPal saying that the recurring payment for this, which had been put on hold, has been reactivated and they are going to charge me for month #2 on April 7th. Which seems like more evidence that they are proceeding to proceed. All of which I will believe when I receive month #2. I suppose we’ll know in 33 days.
